Would any of you frog keepers like to write an article for the Aquarium World magazine on how you keep your frogs? Preferably with pics too Many seem to be interested in keeping them these days and some "Here's how I keep mine" type articles would be very helpful. Thank you in advance

I wonder if they are just stressed and tired from spawning. If the oranda is the only one showing signs of illness (as the comets are showing different signs) I would move the comets to a larger container, or pond. I am sure they are bigger now than when they spawned last year and I think they might be a little cramped. The addition of the new fish was enough to tip the balance. I haven't seen vinson in here for a while so will try contacting him and asking him to read this then perhaps contact you. I seem to remember he recently re-homed some goldfish too.

Hi Mac and welcome. I used to belong to a number of fish forums too but it took up too much time. I now only visit two - and moderate on both, so that is time consuming enough! There used to be an enthusaistic number of fish keepers in Timaru. I hope this is still so.

Hi loveie and welcome. Sorry to hear you are having problems. Perhaps our member Vinson massif can help you as he too, lives in Hokitika (just so you know you aren't alone over there and there are other fish keepers ) Goldfish grow large and are very messy fish that produce a lot of waste. 100L is not big enough for 3 comets, let alone the new addition. Of course, they might be all right at the moment as I don't know how small they are. Sounds like the oranda may have had problems and has spread it to the other fish. Can you take photos of them? It is always easier to tell what is happening from photographs. White spot is a disease caused by stress. Have a look here to learn about it. The red streaks could be a result of earlier ammonia poisoning or finrot. Look at the description here and see if that fits. In the long run, I prefer to see comets in ponds. They are a streamlined fish meant for fast swimming and they can't do this to their full potential in a tank. Have you thought of building a pond? 8) Is the fish really blind or do you just presume so as it is is going in circles?

You may find he will always be prone to whitespot and other diseases due to his history. I fear it will be an ongoing problem His whole immune system was so compromised he probably has permanent damage.

With a tank that size you are spoiled for choice. I would go for mass groups of tetras, barbs, rasboras etc. Shoaling fish are much more colourful when in a large shoal and the kids will love all the movement.

Always check your insurance policy covers both tank damage and damage to carpets, floors etc from the water if they crack. Not all policies do. We specifically asked if our policy covered the tank and they said yes. It never occurred to ask if it also covered the damage done by the water - it didn't. We had to lift, dry and re-lay a lot of carpet. Very expensive. Insurance policies often only cover done by "normal" water supplies eg burst mains, broken tap. They do not consider an aquarium "normal" :-? :roll:

They love maggots. I used to sit a bit of cats meat in the sun a while then wait for the maggots to hatch.

They did the electrical bits on ours too :-? We didn't have the equipment for the heatshrinking.

I wonder if it is an egg bound female. A tumour tends to stick out more one side or another I think. Have you tried the peas or Epsom Salts in case it is constipated? That is the first thing to try. If that doesn't help, then I think there is nothing you will be able to do for it.

Just the heat pad. Use it cos we could. No heaters in the tank so looks better aesthetically. Heat rises so pad is more efficient and heats whole base.
