  1. Hmmm, we go overseas next year and were going to have a stopover in Vancouver. Perhaps we ought to stop in Dubai instead!
  2. If you want to do the salt bath then by all means do so. It is a personal dislike of mine to add anything to a tank if you don't have to. Besides which, on the rare occasions I have tried the salt treatment the fish promptly died so perhaps I am biased. 50% changes a day would be good and I would not add anything else to the water, but that is just me. Go with the majority  If the fungus worsens, or does not improve (it may end up like scab in that the fungus remains until you wipe, or knock, it off but the wound underneath has healed well) then use an anti-fungal treatment.
  3. That looks like a fungal infection secondary to a wound. Keep his water as clean as possible and it should come right on its own. I don't think a salt bath is needed myself. All the salt does is irritate the fish and make it create more mucus. More mucus will not, in this case, get rid of the fungus.
  4. Cinder blocks and board. Not very elegant but it is cheapest. You can cover the blocks with material if you want. The 3 striped sandwich under the tank is; bottom board - support white strip - polystyrene top strip - Pinex heat pad

    Hey All

Hi and welcome. I suggest you join the Totally Tanked fish fanatics for local and personal help and advice if you need it.
  6. No hurry thanks Stella as I have finished the November issue (wanted to get it done before I head off on the Silver Fern Classic Car Rally) so it won't be needed until the February edition (cut-off date for that being December 31st). It will give you something to do over Christmas  If you can do at least 2 of them by then (or the other by Feb) it would be fantastic as I have to do February and May together as I will be overseas a couple of months so need to have the May edition finished at the same time as the February one :-?
  7. I wouldn't dissolve them in boiling water. It doesn't take that long to dissolve them and it is fun poking them about
  8. A lady of leisure now eh? More time to write articles for me
  9. Our waterbed added about $7 to our power bills, from memory, and that was 10 years ago! Hate to think what they cost now.
  10. This is what I did; Pills are usually 400mg each. It as been suggested 400mg/100L. Someone else said 250mg/100L but I think the 400mg/100L may be better. Dissolve required number of pills in about ½ cup of water. They dissolve very slowly as they have a coating on them. Give them a stir every now and then to speed up the process. Once dissolved add it to your tank, swirling the water around to spread it quickly. The stupid fish will think it is food and try to eat it but don’t worry about that. You should notice the cyano dying off within 24 hours or so. It is important to keep siphoning up the stuff as it dies or it will pollute the tank. After 3 days, dissolve and add another dose of pills (same as first dose), siphoning out the dead cyano remains as required. People worry about it killing the bacteria in the filters but I kept my filters running the whole time and noticed no difference. I was told the bacteria in the filters is the wrong sort and is unaffected by the erythromycin. Something to do with gram -ve and gram +ve bacteria.
  11. Did you have planting mix under the gravel or is it just from the plant? I would siphon up as much as possible, net out the big bits, and add an extra filter like an internal or hang on the back to suck out the remainder. You could also siphon it through a net with the end of the siphon going back into the tank if you don't want to change any more water. That means the water goes back into the tank but the mix gets caught in the net.
  12. No idea sorry as I have never used it.
  13. General Idea of Annual Costs of Running your Aquarium Based on freshwater only, at a temperature of 22˚C, total consumption for a small tank (38L) is about 150kWh a year. A medium tank (114L) 150 - 200 kWh per year and a large aquarium (208L) 200 - 400kWh per year. This is using basic equipment only and merely an average to give you an idea. Exact usage requires an ampmeter, which measures actual energy used and not the energy based on the max output, as some equipment does not run full time (eg heater). watts/1000 x hours x kWh cost x 30 = 30 days cost of aquarium

    Hospice Tank

Thanks Amazonian. The flags would be good but unsure about the angels. We have 2 angels in there already. They get on well. Not sure what will happen if we introduce 2 more? You know what angels can be like! :-?
  15. It is a prescription only medicine. Try asking a vet.
  16. Consensus seems to be 400mg/100L
  17. Pretty quickly. My cyano started dying off with 24 hours. You need to keep siphoning it out so it doesn't foul the tank. I never noticed it affect the filter either and was told the filter bacteria was a different sort and not affected by the E. I think alanmin said he lost a tank of fish when he used it but mine were fine, as were fish of others when they used it.
  18. You mean erythromycin? My fish were ok, including bristlenoses.

    Hospice Tank

You have a very warped idea of the role of a hospice wok!

    Hospice Tank

A while ago I was approached by our local hospice to see if our club would be willing to donate a tank to the hospice. Thanks to Sally and Dennis Jackson for the tank and accessories. It is running my spare Jebo on it at the moment. Filling up Full but mucky, thanks to disturbed substrate Sally and I admire our efforts A couple of hours later... and the view as you enter the hospice... Can someone remind me what this fish is? :-? Other fish in the tank so far are a lone male odessa barb (he will get some females later) some harlequins, 2 angels and a small plec of some sort. Bristlenoses will be added and we have had an offer of a couple of kribensis (both female) and some guppies.
  23. If something is stressing the fish they will produce more mucus, causing the "cloudy" effect. Sorry I don't know what is the cause of the stress though . Who knows? What doesn't affect aquarium fish may cause problems with natives :-?
  24. I see he shares his birthday with Google too
  25. I prefer the older model ones in yellow too billaney  Perhaps he will buy me one for my next birthday  living art - it is back ordered Ira; he is too old for a midlife crisis, he is now enetering his second childhood. He didn't particularly want a red one actually, that was the colour they had at the right price. Heir; hope you stay OK. What caused the pains do they know?
