definately mountain minnows, will breed and form a good group, I used to have a big group in with the turtles but introduced goldfish eggs by mistake and they ate all the minnows. Can also chuck in guppies and platties over summer which will breed up fast

last year I had all turtles outside in ponds, snakenecks, red ears and Reeves, depends on age of them. just keep an eye on them, I had one reeves with an underlying shell rot problem that I brought back in and treated and one red ear started basking a lot so also brought in and treated for mild flu, both ok and outside again. that is out of 20 odd turtles so pretty good. Auckland weather similiar to where you find some snakenecks in lower Aussie and Reeves come from climates that get very cold in winter.

I think the system as it stands would be fine if governed correctly, I used to be a fan of being able to breed natives for sale but have changed my attitude as of late and now prefer the current set up, it encourages pure enthusiasts not people just trying to make a buck. I do beleive that if DOC provided more experienced keepers wild stock of dwindling species with the aim of releasing back into the wild there would be many with their hands up to help. If the government wanted to curb the smuggling it would set high penalties and make it not worth the risk for most - instead of a slap on the wrist! Just my thoughts on permit systems etc. by the way Dart frogs, iguanas, chameleons etc are very nice, if I find myself living in a country one day I will definately be keeping them.

so... why do we need exotics in NZ? we do have a good range of natives that can be kept.

Isn't the Aussie permit system based solely on keeping natives? - no exotics.. legally

you can not buy or sell natives - all native species are protected. you will need to find a permitted keeper that has spare that they can give to you. like I said, spend some time going over the Nz herp website, all information is on there and ring DOC for information on what they require in your area.
