  1. Here is aquadude's pic. I am afraid that even with my glasses on I can't see anything except maybe one dot on one leaf! Goldfish lay in plants, that is what piggyvir means. They do not scatter eggs randomly on the substrate. It hsa been many years since I have looked closely at goldfish eggs but I seem to remember they were on the underside on the lilies and looked like a solid mass of bubbles. Snail eggs are not as dense, and are in small clumps here and there all over everything. They are also clearer and jelly-like. Like clear with a black dot in the middle.
  2. Type 2 is the more common one and can be both diet and/or stabby  I think most Type 1s are stabby
  3. When fish lay eggs and are fertilised by the males this is called spawning. In a large area, like a pond, many of the eggs and resulting fry may survive. In a tank most, if not all, will be eaten. If your expert is correct, the eggs you have will not be goldfish eggs If they are clear and look like jelly they may very well be snail eggs. They will be found all over plants and in the 'joints' between stems and branches too. Goldfish usually lay eggs on the underside of wide leaves
  4. Grant has the 450 model and loves it.
  5. By Christmas there will be hundreds to choose from
  6. Organism in ChCh are advertising them in the commercial section I realise the original question was if anyone had them, not who was selling, but I was answering bulldogod
  7. Yes Billaney has bred them and so has one of our club members. Not sure whether our club member has any for sale though so I have emailed him to ask.
  8. Boys develop white spots on the gill area when getting into breeding mode
  9. I did not like to suggest such a thing while she was in the middle of her research and fight but perhaps afterwards, once she has been successful...
  10. Wet Pets, 729 Tremaine Ave, in Palmerston North is worth a look.
  11. You are obviously doing a lot of work with this. Well done!!! :bounce:
  12. Hi Dazza and welcome. I hope you enjoy your visit to NZ. As I live in the larger, better island I can't advise on North Island shops but I am sure there are plenty of others whocan help.
  13. Welcome. I am sure you will get your dream tank eventually.
  14. I found I always had trouble with brown algae in my African tank and I assumed it was because of the lack of plants :-?

    Cycling Question

I never pre-cycled my cold water marine. Just added inhabitants slowly and the filter created bacteria to the correct levels. Perhaps one of the salties can better answer your question as I don't know if levels for marine are the same as for fresh. :-?
  16. Friday 18 September Stoke Hall, Main Rd. Stoke 7.30pm Topic this month is "Tank Decorating". All attending are asked to contribute ideas All welcome. (We meet in the small room at the side of the main room. A sports group often has the main room so don't let this confuse you)
  17. I imagine an Aucklander's idea of cold differs somewhat to that of those of us further south
  18. It is a sign some fish are not behaving well. Fish can get damaged when spawning but it is more usually scale damage on the body. In this case, since you have seen one of them attacking the tails of the others, I would say it is totally due to this. Blood streaked fins along with frayed, white edges, can also be fin rot.
  19. Crushed flake food is fine from birth. They are too big to bother with microworms, brine shrimp, liquifry etc. They are not getting enough food. Liquifry is not enough.
  20. One 405 would be fine. I have a Jebo 819 on my 280L and it copes well (it replaced a 405 which worked, but we hated having to maintain it all the time). Morcs' suggestion would also work.
  21. I seem to remember being advised to do a dive course before going to (in my case) Fiji, as the tutoring was more indepth (no pun intended) and "better quality" than having lessons 'on the spot' in the islands somewhere. Is this so?
  22. Male guppies will attempt to mate with any female (and sometimes other males  ). Always have way more females than males to spread the aggression and constant harrassment.
