I found I always had trouble with brown algae in my African tank and I assumed it was because of the lack of plants :-?

I never pre-cycled my cold water marine. Just added inhabitants slowly and the filter created bacteria to the correct levels. Perhaps one of the salties can better answer your question as I don't know if levels for marine are the same as for fresh. :-?

I imagine an Aucklander's idea of cold differs somewhat to that of those of us further south -

It is a sign some fish are not behaving well. Fish can get damaged when spawning but it is more usually scale damage on the body. In this case, since you have seen one of them attacking the tails of the others, I would say it is totally due to this. Blood streaked fins along with frayed, white edges, can also be fin rot.

Crushed flake food is fine from birth. They are too big to bother with microworms, brine shrimp, liquifry etc. They are not getting enough food. Liquifry is not enough.

One 405 would be fine. I have a Jebo 819 on my 280L and it copes well (it replaced a 405 which worked, but we hated having to maintain it all the time). Morcs' suggestion would also work.

I seem to remember being advised to do a dive course before going to (in my case) Fiji, as the tutoring was more indepth (no pun intended) and "better quality" than having lessons 'on the spot' in the islands somewhere. Is this so?

Same as guppies.

Male guppies will attempt to mate with any female (and sometimes other males :roll: ). Always have way more females than males to spread the aggression and constant harrassment.

Not always. If it fits in the larger ones' mouths they will consider it food. Are we talking goldfish here or another species?

There are too many factors affecting growth to have an accurate chart I would think. Feed little and often, keep up the water changes, and don't overcrowd. This will ensure your fry grow quickly and well.

Quite possibly, depending on the species and size of the tank (and other inhabitants). Males will often do this to show who is boss.

Diving and snorkelling will keep you happily amused with no need for other activities Underwater camera cases are expensive. I believe Canon do a goodie.

You should see what a duck can do hitting a windscreen at 100kph (the car was going 100kph, I don't think the duck was)! You could see all the veins etc from its feet indented in the glass.

We could never convince my grandmother that electricity didn't dribble out of the switch if it was left switched on with nothing plugged into the outlet :roll: Tanks will drop their heat quite slowly. Make sure the filter media stays wet and throw a duvet or similar over the tank and all should be fine. Or, if you have a wood burner, keep it going to keep the room warm.

Only animal here with a name (apart from Grant) is Bud the wonder budgie. Called Bud because it is a short version of Budgie and because bud is also a nickname for friend.

It seems to depend on conditions and the type of snail as to how many you end up with. Watch the apple snails though. There are 2 types and one of them eats plants!
