  1. We set ours up as a rockpool so anything we found in rockpools we figured was fine for our tank (which was about 900mm x 300 x 300 from memory). We only worried about the fish so stuck to triplefins and rockfish. There were those little red anemones everywhere in it. It had an AquaClear (200 or 300) HOB.
  2. I have never seen an aquarium with venetian blinds. Very classy! 8)
  3. I disagree. There is still swimming space
  4. Real intelligent women say "Grant, how much water will fit in here?" 8)
  5. Does this mean someone has a link to the forum or the website on their facebook page? I don't belong to facebook or any of those sites. Haven't got the time
  6. Bet you didn't resist very hard Ira  It was good meeting you and your wife too kiwiplymouth. Not so much cake left now.
  7. It isn't algae, it is supposed to be floating plant   All that is edible. The long plants are sour strips or something, the leaves are spearmint, the fish are choc and other lollies. Happy birthday to you too Gannet! :bounce: Grant's dad had his birthday yesterday. And belated happy birthday to you too Phoenix44 We have our fish club meeting shortly so will share the cake with others.
  8. Thank you for your kind words about the cake. It is actually 2 fruit (Christmas-like) cakes held together with almond and white icing. He loves fruit cake.
  9. Grant (FNZAS President) is 59 today... Here he is with his cake

    Bettas

Welcome. There are a few Betta breeders in here. Always keen to exchange their experiences (and fish)
  13. Latest quote recommends 12mm all over and $1473.19 I think I prefer the original quote, which I assume is for 10mm glass  I agree with Livingart here, for the average home (the tank is not in an area with constant foot traffic anywhere near) less than the recommended will be fine.
  14. Little green shop on the corner of Clyde and Ilam Rds. At the right time of year they also have a great supply of carnivorous plants.
  15. Yes I am His broken leg is going to slow him down even further but I am not in a hurry so it doesn't matter.
  16. Many thanks to all. I think the Euro bracing is the way to go, assuming it is what I think it is  So far I have been quoted $639.95 and $990. One glazier said they couldn't do it as they don't have the thicker glass in that size and it would be too expensive to cut a sheet. Waiting for a third quote. The original quote is my preference (not because it is cheapest) as I know the guy and have seen his tanks. They are great. Trouble is he is in ChCh so I was also looking locally. Looks like a road trip coming up!
  17. I am looking to get a 6ft x 2 x 2 tank built (I think that is 1.8m x 60cm x 60cm). What thickness of glass should I use? I have looked at Warren's glass thickness calculator (all of which went over my head) and think 10mm thickness gives me a safety factor of 2.4 and 12mm will be 3.4. Ideally the safety factor should be 3.8 apparently but that is optimum. How low can the factor be before average safety is compromised? Is 10mm and 2.4 OK? If you have a tank this size, what thickness is the glass on yours?
  18.  I don't think you have enough dimensions to be a fat one either!
  19. Not to mention the seeming lack of a fat controller!
  20. Have you ever visited Merv Smith's model railway in Auckland? "Awesome" as they say these days.
  21. I usually buy my fish from one very small shop in ChCh. I have no idea how their prices compare as I go there because the tanks and shop are always spotless (unless wilson has recently visited  ), the fish are in excellent condition, the range is better than the chain stores, and the advice is accurate.
