  1. If you increase light, then the plants will be stimulated to grow more, therefore requiring more nutrients and carbon for photosynthesis. Carbon from Excel or CO2 inclusion. If you don't add the nutrients the plants may become stunted, or thin and wispy.
  2. On a field trip to St. Arnaud/Lake Rotoiti a DOC Ranger gave a talk about the pest elimination they were doing. They had tagged a couple of wild cats to see how far their territory extended. If I remember correctly it was in the realm of 20 square kms. I think cat owners should be responsible for keeping their cats indoors at night. IMO cats are on par as ferrets as far as pests are concerned. Our native fauna populations are so fragile they need all the help they can get to preserve what we have left. I love my cat to pieces and keep it inside every night. The only thing it successfully catches is crickets But if it developed a taste for the local native birds, like the family of Tui that breeds in our gum trees, then it would be all over for my kitten. IMO native fauna and flora are more important. I totally sympathize with that nursery owner. A pest is a pest.
  3. T5 and T8 are a measurement. Indicating that the tube is 5/8th of an inch, or 8/8 = 1 inch diameter. HTH
  4. Yes, but with the unemployment rate being so low, how many kids are we actually talking about? Not that many on benefits I would imagine. WINZ doesn't hand out benefits to under 18y/o lightly. I agree with Alan's comments that self-discipline cannot be forced. How effective will a boot-camp be to teenagers who have already fallen off the rails for whatever reason? Whether it is from an abusive home, a drug environment, a broken home, how will a military style boot-camp resolve the cause that left these kids this way? IMO parents are more to blame (although not entirely) for causing/allowing/enabling kids to grow up into broken teenagers. But I don't think any government lobbying or policy making will make any significant difference to this situation.
  5. Wasn't it more of a "run-around-playing-dress-up-with-guns-while-smoking-up" kind of affair?
  6. I am not sure when I will be down. Probably in April for a visit. I heard rumours of things going on......
  7. Go to your Profile page (link at top of page) and at the bottom of the page either add a URL, or upload an image that is max. 80x80 pixels and less than 8kb.
  8. With friends in Wellington. I'm on the right.
  9. Farewell Spit http://blog.farewellspit.com/?s=zostera Fancy an excursion? lol
  10. Ira please explain your post. It makes no sense what so ever. The map has a few coloured in red states, and??? Your question refers to "this guy", who is this guy? and what does KFC have to do with a map without scale of key?
  11. Yeah I agree, DIY your own box. Cover the TV with polystyrene, about 1-2" thick. Then wrap it in cardboard eg. broken down chip boxes from the supermarket etc. That is what we did when moving from Auckland to Wellington the first time.
  12. If it is only a misnamed creature why all the secrecy?
  13. What kind of newts? Don't they have water to go into?
  14. From what I have read and IME Khuli never eat snails. Yo-yo's and Zebra loaches do until they grow to be lazy adults You could add a snail trap. A bottle with some food inside, leave it over night and empty out the snails the next morning. Repeat ad nauseum lol
  15. Is your google broken? lol http://www.redseamax.com/redseamax/Red_ ... specs.html
  16. I used spent potting mix so that there was no residual fertilisers in the mix. To get it I repotted an old pot plant. I mixed half old potting mix and half sand. It works a treat. If you use garden soil there will undoubtedly be some bugs in it. So if you don't mind the bugs crawling round that is an ok option. HTH
  17. No, a bird. http://www.galapagosonline.com/Galapago ... obies.html
  18. Yeah it was real cool. I love Boobies.
  19. I don't know if this works on perspex, but on my glass I use Chux all purpose scrub sponge. It is the angled BLUE pad. It is 100% non abrasive on glass. Not one single scratch. They are about $2 from pak n save. I rinse it well first, but it does not have any cleaner added to it. I did a test on a pane of glass in the beginning. I scrubbed for 10 minutes and it did not scratch at all. It works like a charm on white marks, and green spot algae.
  20. I have read posts saying that they can successfully close their operculum (trap door structure) to protect them from poisens etc for months, possibly up to a year. So your best bet would be boiling the substrate. Or even easier getting new substrate. IMHO.
  21. I have to disagree with the statement that it is cruel. If you are feeding it, keeping it in an adequate tank, providing shelter, and clean water it is not cruel. The fish we keep in captivity are glorified domestic 'pets' IMO. I think that keeping a bare tank filled with fish, not for breeding purposes falls into the "ethical argument" category. Using A.Prophecy's tank as an example (no offense intended) his fish are far from being abused. They are looked after, hence those practices can't be deemed cruel IMHO.
  22. If you mean Malaysian Trumpet Snails they reproduce by parthenogenesis. This means you only need one. They are livebearers.
  23. I don't think judging a home aquarium to an importers setup is a fair benchmark to work from. No we don't have a Mekong River in our yard, but fish kept for the home aquaria are not all migratory, or giant fish. Most fish spend their life in a defined area, space, or territory in that river. And most of us are guilty of what exactly??? In My Opinion the home aquarist should attempt to replicate a typical environment the fish lives in. Loaches prefer a faster flowing current, some fish come from black water, some from still pools, some from rice paddies. Fish still have an instinctual memory that they use, how to feed, how to find a mate, how to breed, how to protect their territory. I think that by attempting to replicate their natural habitat to some extent goes a long way to it living a full and long life. Even aquaria bred fish run on instinct. A lot of them are seemingly more tolerant of hobbyist conditions. For example aquaria bred Hillstream Loaches are more tolerant of higher nitrate levels as opposed to wild caught specimens.
  24. and include the idea of assigning human emotions to fish.
  25. Fair enough. It is clear they are healthy looking fish.
