  1. I'm against them. I have looked after too many people who used them and it went bad. I am also against taking things not meant for human consumption. A lot of party pills have BZP as the main ingredient - a chemical that has been used as a cattle vermicide. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzylpiperazine
  2. Hi. I have two Aqua One CF1200 canister filters on different tanks. One works perfectly 100% of the time. The other one is a PITA! It is 6 months old. All directions for use have been followed to the letter: Tray 1 (bottom) bioballs/blue sponge, #2 ceramic noodles/black sponge, #3 filter floss with Seachem purigen sachet. All tubes, connections, fittings, and seals appear to be in perfect condition. All fit and move how they are supposed to. The impellor is not loose. My problem with it: it has a trickle flow, and I cannot seem to keep air out of the circuit. I have reduced the head height to level with the tank. I will get it flowing and with in half an hour enough air builds up inside to stop the circuit from flowing. What suggestions can you give me please?
  3. No I don't know the supplier, but I will buy them for $21 each. I'm sure they charge per scale lol.
  4. I just got a call from HFF Albany that these gorgeous fish have come available on the lists. They are ordering me in some.

    iPond

Yes and the Betta's that are forsale are bred with big tails etc in captivity. They basically are 'domestic' pets. The people who buy a Betta for a speaker while justifying by using a cow hoof puddle example are ignorant and deserve a large measure of pain and suffering imho.

    iPond

Here is the article about the iPond from the Sydney Morning Herald: http://www.smh.com.au/news/technology/f ... 24984.html
  7. Hi JN, I too have a trio of borneo suckers. They are real characters. Mine get territorial over a river stone, the one on top of the stone tries to defend his position by pushing the others off of it, so funny to watch. I like one of their common names: stingray pleco. Mine fly through the sand similarly to a stingray. I have two full bodied fish, and the third is on the skinny side. The skinny one spends most of the day cleaning the glass walls so I don't know why it is still skinny, go figure.
  8. I am using a layer of Dalton's aquatic mix under the sand.
  9. Here is one of my tank. Not the best photo. I love the soft effect the sand creates.
  10. We have one down the road. Thanks C
  11. Cheers for that Naz. I rang the council 3 times already with no luck. The 1st time the phones were disconnected, the 2nd time there was some sort of office meeting, and the 3rd time my call was dropped. Your info is helpful. Our backyard is fenced in with locked gates. I can live with 400mm depth. We did a deck expansion 2 years ago and know there is not any pipes or cables where I want to dig. So it's a goer IMO.

    A Pond

Well I am not allowed any more tanks in the house. I have been given the hard word. Our power bill is high enough as it is, so no more tanks (at the moment - I'm sure I can sneak another in next year....) So I was standing outside today and a thought came to me (rare, I know - it didn't hurt either LOL). I can build a pond. Well really I envisioned a pondlet. It will be about 6'x6'x1.5'. I am going to start it this weekend. I envisioned I will get a whole heap of plants to start with, then maybe think about small fish like WCMM's in a couple of months. I am thinking about a unfiltered pond to start with. I don't really want to spend money on it other than plants atm. We have enough materials lying around the house that will suffice to construct the pondlet. I found a good plan on line: set outline, dig hole, lay sand, foamy layer/old carpet, polythene liner out smooth, appropriate substrate covering liner entirely (to keep out of sun), mound bank around edge, fill with water, leave a week then add plants. I was going to fill it with water change water to start of with some nitrates to boost my first plants. I would appreciate any advice or input from people in-the-know.
  13. I needed to clean a small ammount of smelly gravel a while back, I used a couple of bottles of white vinegar.
  14. Henward, I do my water changes exactly the same as the guy said from HFF. I have been doing this for the last few months with no problems at all. I have an Elephantnose in one of my tanks, and it has never shown signs of discomfort or turning up his fins. Also I do 15% water changes daily with one 60% each week in 5 of my tanks. All my fish are thriving and I have not had any deaths. I'm sure you will be fine.
  15. Hi Myah, there is some comments on this topic: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/what-s ... 26397.html
  16. I am using it in a tropical community tank. It doesn't have salt in it. It only comes in regular sand colour.
  17. The sand I used was from Mitre10 Mega. It was a non-brand Fine Sand, 0-3mm. $5.30 for 25kgs. It is really fine, I have 20+ Kuhli and 4 Horeseface Loaches and they love it. To clean it I put a few inches in the bottom of a 20L bucket, filled it up with the hose while swirling it round. The scum floats, pour it out slowly and the sand will stay in the bottom of the bucket, repeat 2 or 3 times till the sand is clean.
  18. I fed mine frozen blood worms, BBS, live mosquito larvae, flakes, peas, oxygen weed..... They take a couple of months to develop into frogs. Mine prefered the water at 23-23*C.
  19. One of my male Betta's doesn't flare up. He seems entirely uninterested in any refection, other fish, other Betta's. So I just leave him alone. If he wasn't so beautiful and ate out of my hand at feeding I might have made plans to give him away.
  20. I'm not sure mine know that they ought to be burrowers lol. I havn't seen them disappear yet. They sift through the surface sand like mad tho. So cool.
  21. I bought two HFL's today. They are so cool. Its fun to watch them sucking up sand in their mouth and filtering it out their gills. I couldn't find much info on them. Who has kept them before? Do you have any stories about them?
  22. - Kristof - 25 - Student - Thomas Harris books - Bands: Placebo, Radiohead, Live, Infected Mushroom, The Chemical Brothers..... - Family....unfortunately lol - Hobby's: Fish keeping, cooking, reading, landscaping - Hometown Wellington - Love Thai food, not a sweet tooth - Addicted to news, science - Have a tonkinese cat named Dominic, and 8 tanks
  23. Cool pic. I'm getting tree frog tadpoles this week. I can't wait
  24. I've had a number of them die on me. I found a posting about them that stated most DG come with parasites already, which end up disolving their organs. One person suggested if you treat new DG with anti-parasite meds in your Qtank that should make sure they don't die on you...
