  1. Budget...well a few hundie maybe. I want something that is a reliable brand. Definitely not the cheapest end. But I am not willing to hand over an organ or limb
  2. I was wondering if anyone has any opinions about a good video camera to purchase at the moment? I have never had one, but decided I want to get one. I have no idea what to look for, but am not a technophobe Any opinions are welcome.
  3. Wow I bet he was gutted to miss out on 3 days lol I am really looking forward to the wet weather. Give me rain and cold over hot, gritty sunshine anyday.
  4. Ha ha ha. No it was only 3 days. But with an average rainfall of almost 3m we are packing all manner of wet weather gear
  5. I think conditioning has some part to play in keeping fish in an aquarium. If you have regular habits and cleaning regimes your fish will learn and acclimatise to your habits. Whether its specific feeding times, regular water changes, cold water changes etc. As long as your practices are not extreme *most* fish will be fine and adjust. Just my 2 cents worth.
  6. Lol such a great idea With a ride on it takes about 40 minutes I have been told.
  7. I think it comes from the water moving through limestone and quartz. Something about the dissolved particles reflecting different light.......
  8. Thanks guys. It is awesome. I can't wait to go exploring the rivers and streams. Am going to get kayaks too. Yeah it doesn't have concrete floors. Will have to position the tanks above the supports. I figured the best way would be to sit the stands on 1" plywood so the weight is spread evenly on the floor. I am only going to have two 4' tanks to start with. It is only 10 minutes from Lake Kaniere and Dorothy Falls. Some serious adventures are in the pipes
  9. We are definitely moving house at the end of April. I am really excited. We are going to move down to Hokitika for a slower pace of life. Quiet wide open places under the mountains. And especially the Nothofagus forests, I love the southern beech. Here are a couple of pics of the house and land. Stream and river on the farm
  10. One of our research vessels returned with more than 30,000 samples from the Ross Sea. It is a census of Antarctic marine life which is part of an international effort by 23 countries. I think it is a great project. NZ Herald article and NZ Press article
  11. Hollywood Fish Farm stocks them.
  12. It comes with an air line attachment, and a funnel attachment, as well as a directional end piece. It also has a prefilter sponge, I rinse this once a week. It is a good unit imo
  13. Do you mean a submersible water pump, as in a powerhead? If so Via Aqua sell a 1300lph pump. I have one, was about $40, and is totally silent. I am sure there are a bunch of more expensive ones, but this one comes with a whole bag of attachments and fittings.
  14. I found the best thing to tie the plants to wood is very thin clear fishing nylon. Its only a couple of bucks for a reel.
  15. Does anyone have a link or photo of what a wild molly looks like?
  16. I have one too. I run a 10m garden hose on it. I siphon my tank water out onto the garden. I have a power head pump in my big tanks and just put the end of the hose in the outlet. Works a treat, cutting down time significantly. I got a replacement plastic adapter for the faucet but have not needed it yet. They are a definite asset for water changes.
  17. I thought it was more of an opinionated thread because of the original post wanting ideas for a debate. I don't think any of us are politicians, or policy makers using this forum as a basis for change as this is against the guidelines.
  18. Well actually I did. I found that the GHD was the most effective. In particular it cut down on split ends when used in conjunction with the official spray on conditioner. However I stopped using it because I couldn't stomach the boiled broccoli smell.
  19. Yeah I am all for Responsible Husbandry. Yes the spiral leaved one is a different species and legal.
  20. I wanted clarification on straight Val. I emailed MAF about it and they pointed me to the National Pest Plant Accord Then I rang my regional council (Auckland). They said that you may not sell, propagate, or distribute Straight Val. They strongly recommend any outdoors is destroyed. Well I knew this already. I specifically asked about keeping it in the aquarium. The ARC representative on the phone told me that if it was retained in my aquarium, and not propagated or distributed at any time then there shouldn't be an issue. The rep also told me that this is a "surveillance pest plant" and they could not prosecute anyone over this plant. I found this particularly interesting.
  21. Back in the good old days where kids had an imagination, and respect for adults.
