  1. please dont think Im having a go at anyone....Im not, just pointing out that realistic prices are not too bad. Sorry if I did offend anyone as that was not my intention
  2. I dont breed and sell Guppys but if the shop is selling them at $5, they possibly paid a max of $2.50 Now with food, power, time and a heck of a lot of other costs (Including even the petrol to take them to the shop) there is not too much money being made by the breeder and I would suggest that they are doing it at a loss To make say an average income of say $20,000 as a part time income and allowing for say $100 per month for power and $20 for food, the breeder would have to breed and sell over 8500 fish. $5 is really cheap in my mind (BTW I have never sold a fish)
  3. Forgot Join the Killi Club
  4. the mop spawners remove the eggs and place in a small container with a half drop of Meth Blue and wait untill they hatch. Remove the fry and feed with Micro worms or better still with baby brine shrimp untill they are about 10 to 12 mm long. At that stage put the fry in a larger tank and feed untill they are adults. Rachovii Pick up a couple of jiffy pots from the local plant shop, boil the peat to remove fertilisers cool down and do as Wok mentioned. After a couple of weeks remove the peat and squeeze the water from the peat untill its as dry as say tabacco... dont dry it in the sun or anything like that, just squeeze it well. date it and count out 20 to 28 weeks and note the hatch date (I do mine for 24 weeks) and bag in 2 zip lock plastic bags and store in say your hot water cupboard (I put mine in an ice cream container and float on a tank) then when the time comes, empty the peat in something like a chinese take away container, cover with water from your tank, float on a tank if your room isnt heated and wait for the fry to hatch then do the same as the mop spawners
  5. Alan what sort of cod do you have?
  6. lets face it, keeping fish is cheap and breeding fish gives the chance to help make sure that certian type dont just dissappare. Most other hobbies/sports/interests require you to come home from work and go out again where as breeding fish can be done at almost any time. Last night I got home at about 9.30 and couldnt be bothered feeding (I feed twice a day when breeding) so I simply didnt... no harm done Fish have to be possibly the easiest thing that can be done. When I go away for a few days/week, I have to do nothing except go
  7. I feed BBS twice a day and do 10 to 20% water changes weekly. There are alway shells in my water and other than looking not the best, they dont seem to do too much harm. When they get a bit much, I attach a external filter and get rid of most that way
  8. I know of a NZer that bred them in winter with ice on the surface As they need a longer incubation (dry) they would never survive long term here without being bred by us
  9. 6 foot tank you gotta be kidding
  10. Im really trying to breed these at the moment but they are very slow in laying (best was taking 3 eggs in one day) and the fry are very slow in growing. It may well be a few months so remind me in a few months time and I will see how they are going
  11. 30mm to take off older 6mm glass with little experiance is a bit harder Most people try to over hold the cutter but it should be comfy in your hand and should be held firm enough so as not to let it slip but dont strangle the cutter I use Inox as the lube and you could do well by swiping oil down where you are planing to cut If your in Auckland at any stage with a little spare time, give me a call and I will take you to the factory and show you how
  12. Luke What thickness of glass are you cutting strips of? How old is the glass? What sort of cutter are you using has the cutter got misses when your using it Why didnt you ask earlier as we were at Whakatane yesterday and I could have called around and showed you (and dropped of the Micros) on the way back
  13. I may well be able to help in the near future I have 2 males, 6 females and 6 fry but also 6 pair ariving that have just been imported so when they get breeding if its not too cold some eggs could find their way south Very slow growing though
  14. welcome Your avatar?, do you breed them?
  15. Danilada If in doupt phone the Dpt of Labour up as that way you can get the answers to your questions and where you have doupt, you can ask again. I often phone them to clearify thing to make sure that what Im doing is correct. Remember that 90% of employers realise that the main asset is their staff however most employees think that their employer is their worst enemy. Good luck
  16. I have 3 businesses that use the National bank and any $$ thats transfered before 8pm shows up the next day regardless of which bank it is May well be because they are business accounts but never a problem.
  17. and if you can get the right manager, its a great bank
  18. There you are a few for you to look at Im sure that Evil will add another 30 or so
  19. The Jos Plateus have not yet produced an egg so that blows the Ph idea out the door
  20. Ive had my Gardneri Jos Platau seperate for the last week and put the males back in with the females yesterday morning. I would normally have expected eggs last night but not one. I tested the Ph and it was down to 6 again so Ive had the external filter with oyster shell in it going over night. I will take it off this morning (Ph should be at 7 by now) and it will be interesting to see if I get eggs tonight.
  21. If you were to start off tomorrow morning you would need say Monday morning 1 bottle of warm sea water add the eggs Monday evening 1 bottle of warm seawater add eggs Tuesday morning 1 bottle of warm sea water add eggs tuesday evening 1 bottle of warm sea water add eggs syphon the first bottle (the one you started with on monday morning) out through a sive or an old sheet/pillowslip and so the cycle goes. The bottle you syphon out can now be filled ready to put more eggs in the wednesday morning after warming up for 12 hours
  22. I have great success with Australe but nothing with the Striatum but you may well be right. The humid conditions keep the night time temps up so I must check the room temp in the morning
  23. I collect 2 15 leter and 1 20 leter jerry tins so only go to get more every 2 or 3 months. Dont forget that the BBS take 12 to 24 hours to hatch (from memory) and then another 12 to 24 hours to grow a mouth and the other end so during that time, the BBS is feeding on its egg sac so thats the best time to use them as food. My fry are raised on BBS almost totally
  24. Alan Wakelin once told me that the easiest way to get the salt mix rite in the water is to use sea water  I use the same water time and time again, just rince the bottle in a bit of the water and put the rest in and top up 36 hours with a bubbler is best. I have one bottle warming and 3 others set up 12 hours apart so that I have BBS twice a day
