  1. All this is interesting as I have Australe gold coming out my ears (unusual look I know) and even the chocs are doing well although not anywhere as well as the golds... My tanks are often up to 27 through the day
  2. great Send me a photo if you can please Thanks My hatching system is a modified version of what Caserol does
  3. Ive searched for the instructions but I cant find them but basicly, you need to make one single cut. If you get misses (and you will know what I mean if you get them) just join them up rather than go over the whole cut as a double cut will transform the nature of the cut and probably cause it to break off line. Use a light oil as Alan mentioned(?) we use inox and make a single firm score along the glass. Depending on how much of an offcut you have depends on weather you snap the glass over the edge of a table or straight edge or weather you put the end of the cutter under the glass and put downwards pressure on both sides.
  4. if I could talk to the animals, think what fun it'll be, talking to a killi in killanese seen that movie Just wish they (the killis) would tell us what they want eh Ive met Stu once (plus next weekend )and never met Alan but all the help you all give must mean that your good blokes You have both helped me and hopefully I can return the favours in the future
  5. FRIDGEEEEEEEEEEEEEE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  6. I agree about the nothos Alan but I have a Korthause Yellow in mine since last August although I did loose the female I had in there As I get more Nothos, I will add them to the tank
  7. thats what I have done in the lounge almost males only and normally 2 of any type
  8. I certianly would never argue with Scheel but I find it interesting that the activity increases so much. Stu mentioned that some peat I had sent him didnt have much in the way of eggs (Korthause) and the peat I took last monday was the same (well to these old eyes anyway). The Ph was at 6 or lower and the fish had little interest but since then I have had oyster shell in an external filter running through the tank and the Ph is 7 so I think I will put peat in again this weekend and see what the egg rate is. I also raised the Ph on the Striatum and again the fish are a lot more active. I wont put a mop in yet as the females are too young but in a week or two after checking the Ph again, I will try them as well. They, as most people are finding, are not interested in breeding either. I put this down to heat but may well have to rethink I will keep you posted
  9. As the heading say My Ph has been low(well my tanks anyway)... most tank at 6 or below. I have raised it to 7 and straight away the interest in the "other half" has increased 10 fold... nothos, I would have thought, would have been far better off with a lower Ph Any comment please?
  10. if they are not illegal then retailers should be able to stock them and display them This from an exsmoker that cant stand being in the same room as smokers that are smoking
  11. jayci I have a bach there so I drive down and just use it from there, a boat ramp is about 1 km away Alan Give it back to the kids, your far too old to play with it in the bath
  12. Just sits in the drive at home in Aucks so probably should
  13. 6kg calcutta 400 on an 6kg Albagraph rod... its light gear The snapper was 25lb and the next bait pulled a 44lb Hapuka. I tried to release the snapper but it was too far gone so off to the smoker for it the next photo is of a 32kg Hapuka. That Hapuka was the 2nd biggest as the other was caught by a first time Hapuka angler at 50kg and the third is of a marlin that was tag n released in the Eastern Bay of Plenty
  14. 16ft ramco but normally used at Coromandel... just dont seem to use it up here
  15. Ira I really cant be bothered with this argument and wonder why when I have experiance I even bother to offer it. Emotive writings like torn out tell me what your thinking and hope that one day you will be open to different ideas. I wont bother with this thread again I give up
  16. yes Broken flights and fret marks also after a hard wet weather flight, sometimes the flights would be bent upwards so plucking would allow correct natural flights to reform. On squeakers that were a bit older and too strong on the wing, plucking was a great way to let them slowly get used to flight as their homeing ability are not strong when young. When racing widowhood, plucking females was to stop them leaving the widowhood boxes and flying around the skys Hope this helps understanding the feathers Ira. We do tend to think that some of the things we do are painful to the birds but the last thing a person that races pigenos wants is to put a bird off and there fore make them a little slower to come home. Its a similar arguement with useing hooks to catch fish. Those that go fishing often will have experianced fish that have been caught and released then being caught again more than once on the same day (or close to it) The hook marks are very fresh yet it hasnt stopped the fish from taking another bait within minutes an in the same area.
  17. Agree totally about experiance Having upwards of 120 racing pigeons and heaps of other hook beaks I also have needed to pluck the flights. Regrowth though is normally 6 to 8 weeks if they are not in there normal moult season
  18. Interesting that people hold Marlin (?) in such high regards. A trusty old snapper is a far more cunning fish that a marlin. Marlin have been caught on anything from bananas to hunks of rope and pieces of wood. Snapper are far brighter than that I can tell you
  19. Birds will often drop flights when they are damaged just like your skin repleces its self all the time and yes, just like your finger nails growing all the time. Its not cruel and provided you pull them with one movement and in the direction that they are growing, there will be a lot less problems than cutting the flights... this from well over 40 years of experiance with no problems
  20. Wing clipping can be dangerous and not good for the birds. A better way is to pluck the flights so that they can grow back naturally. Clipping can let disease in through the open quill and I have had pigeons that have had problems that way. You also need to be carefull about not cutting the part that has blood in it (in the quill). Often people will relly on clipping but a lot of birds can still fly with half wings. Also bear in mind that flying is a form of defence so make sure that they are safe after wards... your pet can is the biggest danger
  21. www.fishing.net.nz One of the people in these forums produces a TV show called the ITM fishing show so next time your watching it (Saturday afternoons when on) on TV! have a look for him
  22. too rite I enjoy fishing and especially game fishing. Vinson 99% of game fishing fights are over in well under 30 minutes and the marlin swim away with no problems and what is so addictive is that you get so few. I know that American programs show them as hours long in the fight but thats not how most of it is done. I respect your view but disagree. Whitebait is with out a doupt, my favorite food... sorry, I seem to be disagreeing again
  23. by not posting a photo I can be anything I like mmm today I will be a 8yo historian that enjoys stock car racing and porcelian doll making while hanging upside down
