  1. On my suggestion Caryl is going to put chocolate in her CD pack, so that next time she doesn't have to wait until she is let out to be able to eat it.
  2. Blackline flying fox/SAE will eat the new growth of black beard algae and nibble away at other green algaes. Bristlenose eat brown algae and green algae on the glass but not the hard green spots. If your bristlenose is sucking then it is eating.
  3. If you have the right conditions in the aquarium, ie plenty of clumps of moss or spawning mops near the bottom the female will scatter eggs during the courting process. They do not lay, as in attach their eggs to the glass or rocks but they just release (scsatter) them and if there is plenty of cover the eggs will not be eaten by the parents. Have a look at this link http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/hy ... n-amandae/
  4. Thats your job - you need a good hard scraper or pad to remove it. Nothing else will do it for you. Brown algae a BN will eat and its possible that there is more in the tank than what you can actually see - it may be eating the stuff
  5. Bump!! Reminder registrations close end of this month!!
  6. omg!! I suppose I would have to put one on mine as well then  Nice Caryl!
  7. Thats a really good piece of advice Smidey
  8. Working today. Had a great ride up to Russell via State Highway 16 to Wellsford and then up 1. Stayed at The White House in Russell. Coming back we took the ferry to Kawakawa and then went down the west coast, through the kauri forests (stopped and visited Tane Mahuta), Dargaville and back home. Great ride despite showers and rain patches both ways. Now we sit back and wait to see if we get mail from Traffic Control!
  9. Dead fry bodies will raise the ammonia so your reading may not have been at that when they died. Could their be bodies up the filter or hidden under rocks? Whats your pH?
  10. I get four days off starting tomorrow. My son and his partner arrive here on Friday for one night. Saturday hubby and I are heading to Russell on the bike - staying in a very posh hotel  Back on Sunday and I have work on Monday. Looking forward to two days off in a row - the first this year.
  11. Nitrite levels will remain raised until the cycling process is complete. Prime will be removing the toxic nitrite even though you are still getting a reading. Once the tank has cycled it will drop to 0. Doing all those 50% water changes will be slowing the cycling process down. Cut your feeding down to 1 small feed a day and be patient.
  12. Prime gives a false reading as in when you use it it will be removing the nitrites but the test kit will show them present still. A 5ppm nitrate reading is good. Be happy with that.
  13. IME - one eye is normally from an injury of some sort. Good clean water for 3-4 days should see it clear up. Both eyes more likely a bacterial infection. If you have melafix on hand you can start a course of it for either of the above. Otherwise you will need to get a medication for it.
  14. fixtures - carpets are under household so worth a try
  15. When my 450 litre let go last year the only way my insurance company would pay out was through Public Liability Insurance, which they were pushed in to by our landlords who have commerical insurance on their properties. Cost to the insurance company was $3,600 which was replacement carpet and underlay and costs incurred drying out the room. The tank replacement I had to pay for myself as the insurance company didnt want to know about it under our contents policy.
  16. If you go to the right hand side of the page and click on the search facility then put the word 'backgrounds' into the keywords search you will come up with any number of threads and discussions on what people use for backgrounds and how they make their own. This way you will be able to read through the information from start to finish and decide what you want to do.
  17. You are in the absolute best part of the country to get driftwood. Any hardwood washed up on the east cape beaches is a good shape and you can do so much with it.
  18. Two weeks on from the rearranging and after a serious trim today, where I removed about 15 large leaves of the Horemani sword and trimmed the other two swords, I feel the tank is nearly how I want it. The glosso needs to spread further. I have added a second power head to the left of the tank to give some water movement on that side of the tank. Pics -
  19. sorry Sam, I changed my post. Yes I would just change the impellor as well. Each to their own.
  20. Just so I have this right - you mean having a pump connected to the output so the water is pulled through. All I could imagine happening is the canister running dry.
  21. Not me, hubby is an ex chemistry/physics/science/maths teacher. Son is too. no need to google I just ask them lol
  22. Heat is the total energy content. Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles. Heat is a form of energy whereas temperature is a scale of the average energy. I'm not telling on them. They came and visited me at work today.
  23. Its common for BBA to attach to driftwood and no plants means nothing to soak up excess nutrients in the water. You could mass dose in the paddling pool but the only way to keep it totally at bay is to use it at the correct amount daily. It is one of those algae that every time a tuft, no matter how small, breaks off it will reattach to another surface and grow. So basically if you take the wood out and leave any tufts behind it will still be in your tank.
