  1. Queen Arabesque plecs are here in NZ but the ones I have seen, from memory, have finer lines than the one pictured. With the way you have your tank set up they are less likely to be able to hide as much. It is really hard to judge how much a plec will hide - if your house is quieter and no one 'pops up' in front of the tank they are less likely to be spooked. On average we see the ones in the shops where they are subjected often to noise, people all around and children tapping on the glass. No wonder they hide - I would too! Definitely the big band tiger plecs are more visible in the tank, they are not as shy but there are also other beautiful plecs around in the shops. One thing to remember, what you have as bottom dwellers is also dependent on what middle top layer fish you have. Oh and $250 is a good price for a CO2 bottle that size, mine cost me $500 and then I still had to get a solenoid as the regulator that came with it didn't have one as part of it. The bottles are already inspected and unlike some you buy, you are not going to have to mess around finding a regulator that fits.
  2. Twisted val - I am just checking you are not dosing with flourish excel? That will most likely cause it to melt. The val might die down but hopefully will regrow. Try not pushing the roots down too deep.
  3. Dangle some pieces of courgette or cucumber in your tank and pull them out when they are covered in snails. That works well. I have also found that MTS love shrimp pellets, pile a few in a corner and net the snails out with them when they come to eat. Other option is to borrow some clown loaches - they will get rid of the visible population but there will still be some turn up in a few months. Normally early morning, just before light the snails come up towards the top of the tank - if you can grab as many as you can each day that will also help.
  4. I think I would still gladwrap or make sure the tank is tightly sealed with gel baits. I would hate to think something would fall in your tank and poison your fish.
  5. You would possibly do better if you went and looked through the livebearers section on the forums to see who has what. There are some very good guppy breeders in the country and from time to time they discuss what guppies they have and post photos. Hope this helps
  6. If you research on google Discus compatibility you will get any number of fish suitable to keep with discus. Cardinals, while more expensive can handle the higher temperatures, neons can not. You will lose a lot more neons which in the end will cost you more than cardinals.
  7. 8. Welcome to the forums. Buying tanks with existing fish often leads to the new owner ending up with fish that are in too small a tank. It seems that a lot of people, instead of purchasing a bigger tank just sell the lot off as one sale. I'm glad that you realise the tank is too small and are looking to remedy it
  9. Good on you for getting a bigger tank for your cichlids. There are a number of cichlids which can happily live in a 200 litre tank.

  12. Wheres here. Coffee is in my car and I'm leaving in a couple of minutes.
  13. Melafix does sometimes work on it and it is worth giving it a try. If its bacterial then generally it is both eyes affected and thats when you need something stronger. I wouldn't mess around with a carcinogen like furan until I had tried alternative methods.
  14. A lot of the spelling doesn't worry me in the slightest. However some people simply don't realise that what they are writing is wrong and I thought a small guide might be of some help. I do dislike txt speak on the forums, but no more than I dislike it when people cannot be bothered putting in full stops. However in those cases I simply refuse to read those posts - I don't feel I am missing out, there are plenty of properly written posts on here.
  15. Why don't the two of you have a face to face discussion this weekend? might make more sense then Liam.
  16. Could be pop eye in a smaller version, could be caused by an injury or the fish may have gone blind in that eye. Generally if its pop eye or caused by a not too major injury it will resolve itself with clean water. If bacterial it may spread to the other eye.
  17. This is the lighthood where the light is part of the hood itself as opposed to a bulb which can be removed and replaced? The bulb attaches at one end only and the unit can not be opened to remove it?
  18. aaaahhhhhhhhh NO NO NO David - BAD BOY!!!
  19. Was thinking earlier that I should have said that as well Caryl. Bubbas is the most dreadful thing to call fry.
  20. :sml1: thinking here ox weed = oxygen weed = elodea? I do wish people would use the correct words
  21. I expected Ira to be the first to make a comment.
  22. I am beginning to think that perhaps there should be a section on this forum to assist English as a Second Language members. I do not know how much longer I can cope with seeing the word 'frys' or 'fries' when referring to more than one fry. Fry is singular or plural (meaning the same word is used no matter how many fry there are). Fries are french fries or cooked chips, they are not fish. Now I have said the above I feel much better.
