  1. It could be a cut that has become infected or ulcerated. Have a look at this page - it suggests melafix as the first treatment. Melafix is a good first treatment for a number of skin ailments. http://www.mchportal.com/fishkeeping-ma ... -fish.html
  2. Metro is by prescription only. I have never purchased it but I do remember being told about 7 years ago it was expensive then. Most people, when dosing move the fish into a much smaller tank so they do not need to use so much each dose. If you are taking the fish to the vet get as much documentation off the internet as possible showing that this is what you need Perhaps try the vets attached to animates, they may see fish more than most vets.
  3. Have a read through this - (there is more to this site than just the forum ) http://www.fnzas.org.nz/?p=1868

Looking good! Are you running a chiller?
  5. havent got time to re read the rest of this thread Sam but I would imagine the water is getting too warm for them and oxygen is becoming depleted. Can you rig up an extra air stone?
  6. The information will be going out to clubs along with the procedures to be followed by all. This will give all FNZAS members the opportunity to read, discuss and feedback to their clubs, along with their vote. Even those members not able to attend meetings will be contacted by their clubs.
  7. Well I am sure Warren will look in to it for you and also myself and check that all club delegates can access the Exec area.
  8. If you are going to quote what I have said please use it in the context of the reply as given to the question you asked. The response I gave was to the original email being sent to President, Secretary and Delegates - that is my 'everyone' reference.
  9. Ask away as much as you like. That is what the forum is for - oh and for giving advice lol. Okay, your nitrite is too high, should be at 0. Possibly you have some ammonia as well. Do you know what the nitrogen cycle is? Ammonia and nitrite will burn fins, tails and gills of fish, sometimes the damage is permanent and irreversible. In a tank that size the male will be stressed and also will be stressing the females. You would be better with either a bigger tank with plenty of plants if you want to keep them together or keep them apart. Can he stay in the tank he is now? If so add melafix to that tank, it is a 7 day dose cycle so keep dosing for 7 days and see if the tail repairs itself.
  10. What is the fish used to being fed? He may be eating but you just may not see it. If he is the slowest fish to get to the food you may need to feed for longer and in the end remove waste. Some cichlids will hang back until the faster and nastier ones finish eat their fill before coming out for food.
  11. Thanks everyone. Had a good but exhausting day! Shall not tell you how old I am but certainly older than most of you
  12. what are your tank readings - ammonia, nitrate, nitrate and pH (pH to a lesser extent). I know you have said above they are fine but what is fine? That is not damage caused by a filter or water movement. How much salt did you add and how long for, how much melafix and how long for? Have you tried anything else now or with the other ones?
  13. Hi 18 months is a good time for a domestic fighter. 3 months is not. Experience has taught me that fighters with the long tails do not handle trickle filters well as the constant movement of the water tires them out and they often end up, particularly at night resting with their tails against the intake. This could be the reason it is being damaged. Can you post a pic of it? Fighters can cope with temps of 22 up to 30, 28 is optimum breeding temp. 25-26 is a good temperature to hold the tank at for normal display.
  14. thanks - pretty pleased with it. Now to keep it looking good until after Conference in June!
  15. lol knew you would say that!! All good, you are brilliant at what you do.
  16. latest shots taken on Saturday, the tank has not had any pruning or tidying for a couple of weeks so needs a tidy up. Growth is good, fish seem happy enough. The only plant which is not thriving is the red pine, thanks to the dwarf chain loaches. bosemani rainbow calico or juwel longfin bn parkinsons and red rainbows
  17. Yes it is Sam and I have some golds, courtesy of Sophia if you would like to add them
  18. I hate to say this, but you need to go in yourself. You have no idea how many people muck me around with technical stuff just because I am a woman. It may not make any difference but seeing as you are the one the discussions were with then you really need to speak to them personally, and in particular the person whom you asked to make the change in size. If you are certain you had a receipt for the correct measurements then they must have a duplicate on record. Did you not see the person you spoke to write down what you asked?
  19. Currently the FNZAS is looking to the future as far as development of the website and fishroom goes. I am looking to compile a data base of fishkeepers who use this forum, who have skills in any of the following areas, and would not mind being asked for advice - Website Design, Website Development and IT. I would also like to know if there are any Lawyers out there. Please can you pm me if you might be able to assist or know of another fishkeeper who can. Thanks
