  1. Taking a heater out of the water when it is hot will damage it.
  2. Blackworms if you can find someone with them.
  3. Have you got instructions with it? I would think perhaps it needs to be calibrated if it has that ability. What does the thermometer in your tank say?
  4. Did you look at the article on this website as well?
  5. Not that I am aware of. There is no shop by this name in the Shop Directory list which I have on my desktop.
  6. I would move him back to the guppy tank. Its a bit different when the days are warmer but once the days cool off, while it may survive it will no longer thrive.
  7. What sort of plants are you thinking of keeping? If you go to the top left of this page, click on home and go to the plants there is a database in there of plants and their lighting requirements. If you are looking low - mid light plants a T8 light fitting will work. If you are looking at red plants or plants requiring high light you will need T5HO lighting. More than 30cm deep and T8 struggle to penetrate. There are also LED options on the market but I don't know anything about them.
  8. Sorry I can't help with that. I am very new to marines which is why I use Living Reef. The brand of salt I have purchased removes the need for some of the supplements, that much I do know.

  11. I am boring and went for black. While it was great on the rainbowfish tank it is not so on the discus as it is encouraging those with pigeon blood in them to pepper a lot.
  12. How long have you been keeping fish. How big is the tank and what else do you have in it?
  13. Can you post a photo of the fish on here?
  14. It might if you got two females kris, males get too big and if a pair spawn the tanks not going to be big enough. Kribs can be quite aggressive to each other and to other fish if they have eggs/fry. Threadfin rainbows are very delicate fish, look fabulous in a decent sized group.
  15. I saw masses in the ponds above the falls in the Bay of Islands too.
  16. 1 have 5 x 25 litre containers and am in Epsom, one block off the Market Rd off ramp if you want them ooops just read further up. 021 165 5349 if the drum doesn't work out.

    newbie :)

I can't grow java fern unless I put it in a tank with no lighting and forget about it. I don't think it likes particularly high lighting conditions. It is not a root feeder, it needs fertiliser in the water column ie flourish comprehensive.

    What fertilisers are you using?
  19. Welcome Piha - we were over there yesterday They were having tests of the tsunami warning system - that was one way of making 18 motorcyclists leave pretty fast. It's a decent commute and no the public transport system won't really be suitable. I have extended family living in Henderson Valley - my brother in law is in the Science/Engineering block at Auckland Uni in the city. He leaves home about 6.15am to 'beat the traffic'. It's not so much the getting in to the city in the mornings that is the issue but the North Western Motorway going home is pretty gridlocked at times (mind you which Auckland motorway is not). My daughter is building at Hobsonville Point which is up the Northern. If you go north there is a much better transport system in place, with park and drives and bus lanes. Its pretty hard to find rentals in Auckland. You will need to start looking early, be prepared to pay a lot and possibly an extra 'bonus' amount to make sure can get one. Get some really really good references, that will help. We have two rental properties and our tenants are sitting tight!
  20. Okay Rose Red always have bars - thats how I ID them Peppering - any discus with pigeon in it will pepper unless it has been bred out of it through generations of breeding. These discus pepper more if they have 1. dark background on the tank 2. dark substrate . Yes they can pepper a bit more if stressed. My discus are not stressed yet they are peppering up. I have a black painted back to my tank and black fluorite My Rose Red always has bars on it but yes, some do bar when they are stressed. With these guys its the norm. Stop worrying enjoy your fish
  21. Its being sold as a plug and play so I suspect the filtration is in the back of the cabinet, similar to the Red Sea Max 250 tank. Just be aware that if you fiddle with the construction of the tank or stand then you will be not be covered under warranty should anything happen.
  22. I left myself open to that didn't I :rolfl: Are you interested in breeding fish in it is what I should have said! I know you said schooling fish but what about a pair of something like bolivian rams, electric blue, or rummy nose, some of the smaller rainbow fish like the blue eyes, thread fins?
  23. That front plant is sagittaria microfolia - I do not know if it is available in NZ any more - the chch earthquakes put paid to the main grower of it.
