  1. Purplecatfish was breeding them for years but I don't think he does any more. He had a massive tank with a river theme, probably an 8ft tank. Not sure if he is on here these days but you could try sending him a pm.
  2. In this tank no CO2, and only T8 lights. The tank is 60cm deep. Substrate was Daltons propagating sand and Daltons Aquatic mix. Very little excel either discus really don't like it.
  3. Same as Godly3vil. If you search my name back from mid 2012 to about the end of 2009 you will see the many plants in my discus tank ( details are in the posts but a few pics are attached here. The ones I have in with my discus atm are anubias (nana petite, nana and anubias barteri ), 3 or 4 sorts of crypts, magdalensis chain sword, glosso, rotala macaranda, windelov fern and christmas moss. I don't recall ever having a plant melt due to the extra heat in the tank.
  4. I would tend to leave them alone - they will be stressed enough. They will have been lying on their sides for quite a while if the bags burst earlier in their travels so may take a while for them to find the right way up again.
  5. HFF do stock hardwoods/dense wood as well - have for years - but people have been dead keen to get the wiggly branched look that spider wood has. You could always attach some sinkers by fishing line for now assuming you have a little substrate to bury them in.
  6. A nice looking stand but how thick is the wood used? Your tanks going to weigh 160kg+ by the time its full and I don't see any diagonal bracing to stop it swaying to the left and right.
  7. Welcome back. I was wondering what had happened to you this year
  8. Has anyone been to this? Is it worth my getting up at 7am tomorrow to go to?
  9. Discusguru from this forum is an oranda breeder with a good reputation. He also sometimes sells them from his shop. Send him a pm.
  10. IMO best and tidiest option would be a sump then everything pretty much can go out of sight

    BB or not?

    thanks everyone for your help

    BB or not?

Won't it look disgusting while the tank is in its initial 'cycling' period, as in covered in algae?

    BB or not?

What is peoples preferences as to whether they have a sand bottom to their tank or not. My tank will only be 250 litres so there is no way I am going a 10cm deep sand bed. That leaves with with a smallish sand bed or bare bottom. What do you prefer and why?
  14. Otos live to eat brown algae and BN will eat it too. Cyano is a bacteria normally found in 'dead' spots of your tank, if you can adjust the spray bar to allow for more water movement it will reduce particularly if you siphon out the worst areas. Otherwise you will need to get something to get rid of it as per Alan. Pouring boiling water over BBA gives it a huge unpleasant shock. If you were able to follow it up with a small amount of excel syringed directly on to the areas of persistant growth you might be able to get rid of most of it.

  16. Perhaps keep your lights off while you wait for discus guru to comment. Some meds are light sensitive but I do not know if prazi is one of them.
  17. it definitely sounds like some sort of parasite and does sound like gill flukes. How heavily are they breathing?
  18. I've seen some for sale here that look like that but are not called by that name.
  19. The only thing I can say is that the pH is a little high for discus. You have driftwood in your tank so how long has the tank been set up. I don't think thats the problem but discus guru will have more idea than anyone else I know.
  20. Make sure you keep it where the neighbours can't see it :rolfl:
  21. I do not know about neon tetra disease however the ammonia poisoning will effect fish in different ways. It can take up to a couple of weeks for fish, whose gills were damaged in the initial ammonia spike, to finally succumb to it. Ammonia burn can cause loss of colour as well.
  22. How many in the tank, how long have you had them, how big are they?
  23. What are your tank readings pH, ammonia etc etc? Has the blue diamond started to come out again and eat?
  24. If your tank is at 27 degrees you can use cardinals, neons, harlequins as good fillers in a discus tank. Discus prefer 28-30 and while you can keep the same fish I listed at these temps the heat does mean that they mature faster and die sooner as their whole metabolism speeds up. IMO minnows won't survive with discus - they really are 18 - 22 degrees fish and can do even cooler water.
