  1. That comment is so true. The ring roads weren't built to cope with the central city traffic loading and now everyone tries to use them. I do find it frustrating also that the turning arrows don't seem to be on in many of the bigger roads, particularly when the lights have them available for use. As I am only a visitor to ChCh these days I often get stuck at them waiting for it to come on to find out that its not hooked in to the system. However there appears to be major works going on - perhaps the planners may have been better to do one main route around one side of the city and complete it before putting road works everywhere making nothing the preferred route. Thats easy for me to say though
  2. I see the above fish are for sale at retailers if anyone is interested Heres a link to what they look like and their requirements: http://www.killi.co.uk/speciesProfile/N ... /foerschi/
  3. As far as I can tell, crypts don't like a change in conditions.
  4. One other thing that I forgot to add Be prepared to say if you don't know the answer. You can either find out from someone else in the shop, or take the contact details, find out and call them back. It is way better to say you don't know than give them the wrong information. Fishkeeping is a hobby, fish keepers are passionate about their hobby and they don't like to be led in the wrong direction.
  5. If I was a shop owner of an aquatics shop I would be looking for a person with the following: Experience in keeping fish themselves A general knowledge about plants, medications, food, filters and other dry goods. Someone who has experience dealing with the public - patience, tolerance and can relate well to all nationalities, age groups and experience levels A person who is prepared to do manual tasks ie tank cleaning, shop cleaning - dusting etc A person who has an eye for details A person who has had some form of retail experience
  6. I agree - I have never seen so many cones. There must be millions of them.
  7. https://nz.news.yahoo.com/a/-/local/237 ... tive-fish/ Read the link above which starts off like this Saturday 24 May is World Fish Migration Day, an event highlighting the importance of open rivers and migratory fish, and celebrated in over 250 locations worldwide. This year Auckland Council is celebrating by completing remedial works across the region to open up stream habitats for native fish.....
  8. uuh oh! If you don't want to go right into Christchurch take the by pass from Belfast heading towards the airport. That will take you very near Redwood Aquatics
  9. haha - I am Christchurch born - lived there the first twenty four years of my life and in Timaru for nearly 12 years. I did note when the President and I drove to Dunedin from ChCh for conference it took over 2 hours to get to Timaru, mostly due to the number of trucks.
  10. Our very own President Jennifer Hamlin is talking fish. Channel 2 Please note: This show is not aimed at experienced fish keepers but younger ones.
  11. hhhm 2hrs 6 mins ChCh - Timaru!! Don't know when it last took me that long to do the trip Timaru has a very small pet shop in the main street. Feedback from my friends who still live there is that its not much use for aquatic stock.
  12. HF Mt Roskill has it - I think it was $20 per kg but they don't have a huge amount.
  13. Rosy tetra, ornate tetra or xray tetra?
  14. That would be good I've never purchased a new Eheim so not looked at the box You might need to go to the CF1000 for the bottom hosing if you can't fit the smaller on. I found this which indicates the same size hosing fits https://www.eheimparts.com/display_product.php?pid=2217 but I also found this http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/showt ... p?t=179027 which indicates its not although there seems some debate as to which is the larger
  15. If it is new then it should have come with a splash guard. They are perspex. No, you do not have to have one but they do protect the reflector and bulb from water damage. If you don't get one be careful not to put your hands on the bulb when its hot or the light is on.
  16. Eheims are good filters. The one you have will move up to 1000 litres of water per hour but that is without media in it. To work out what you need in the way of flow, minimum turnover is 4x per hour, up to 10 so in theory it should cope. Whether it not it does will depend on the media you put in the filter, what you put in the tank in the way of fish, plants, rock layout, and how heavily you stock the tank. As far as hosing goes I think CF500/Aquis 500 for the smaller and CF 700/Aquis 700 for the larger. However it should be the same sized hosing going both ways. I have also sent you a pm.
  17. I followed the thread that I think you posted a while back on cycling rock and it's going well for me. Junglejim - You can buy live rock at some pet shops (mostly specialist shops), costs around $20 per kg rather than the $13 per kg for 'dead' rock. You can sometimes buy off others but from my understanding you can also buy nasties if they have them in their tanks.
  18. Only bad for the cat if it falls in. Bad for the fish if it is constantly spooked. Very bad for you (actually your wallet) if the cat knocks the filter so it comes apart and runs dry. Hows the cat getting up on it?
  19. hmmmm I will have to go back and look again.
  20. I saw some in the shops this year.

    New on here

How many plants do you have in the tank and how often and how much water do you change. Unless your tank is very heavily planted an established tank should show some nitrates. Nitrates are the final stage of a cycled tank and it is when there is a reading shown with 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite that the cycle is completed Brown algae is common in new setups.
  22. Eheims are very good and I rate the 2213 highly. It would suit your tank well.
