  1. Do you have snails or do you just want loaches? My dwarf chains have decimated my red pine - they wiped out any new shoot that dared grow. I never had trouble with my clown loaches in my planted tanks.
  2. That I can't answer sorry. I guess if you used one net per waterway things would be pretty safe but I really don't know. I think its more aimed at those who catch a fish on a whim, take it home then either decide they don't want it so let it go in the nearest stream or pop it in a tank set up then release it. That then sets up the risk of contamination from other waterways or tanks getting into streams. It's the same reason that one shouldn't dispose of their fish tank water where it will get into waterways.
  3. Before I start I need to confess that the only thing I know about natives is that once caught you can not release them, not even back where they came from. Have you looked at this link http://www.fnzas.org.nz/?page_id=212 - its on this website. Gives a little information about various natives. There are several very knowledgeable people on here, hopefully one will check in soon
  4. maybe they did breed or maybe it was but a fleeting moment in time
  5. My pigeon female spawned last night. No idea who the male was, if there was one at all. I wasn't expecting it as I thought the pigeon was way too small and young. Anyway half an hour later the turq ate all the eggs. I was wanting to sell the pigeon so at least now can say its a she.
  6. How often are you changing the water and what are you feeding?
  7. I'm also guessing planaria. Normally caused by overfeeding. Don't feed for a couple of days and the fish will eat them - then when you do start again cut back the amount.
  8. Theres only been 3 digital AW and it wasn't the last one so either aug or nov which came out in Dec. Sterilising plants generally means they dip them in a potassium permanganate solution. Read this though - its interesting http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/view ... =4&t=23536
  9. Females will lay eggs without a male present - you may have two females. If the male is present he will attempt to fertilise the eggs. It often takes many goes before a pair is successful even in the fertilising process and longer until they manage to hatch them.
  10. They are cleaning where the eggs will be laid. This still doesn't mean that you have a pair - you won't know unless the eggs hatch.
  11. When I had a massive melt in my tank around christmas due to prolonged and heavy use of a mix of antibiotics the only plants that did not melt were my crypts and anubias. My crypts do seem to be pretty tolerant of most things, including being moved from tank to tank. I haven't dipped them simply because I don't want the hassle of pulling and replanting but I may yet do so.
  12. Depending on where the jungle is will be dependent on whether or not a chiller is needed but I suspect the answer will be yes you do need one.
  13. There is a detailed article in one of the digital Aquarium Worlds on getting rid of algae and information on how long to dip for. Cyano thrives in dead spots in the tank so if you can get a better flow it should stay away once you siphon out whats there. Its a bacteria not an algae and you can dose with antibiotics to get rid of it. Excel is supposed to be dosed daily.
  14. There should be 0 phosphate in potassium nitrate. If you are reading correct or near then I would get rid of the lot as clearly there is a mix up and you have no idea what else may be in the mix.
  15. I believe you use the TDS on water before you mix the salt in. Activated carbon would filter out some chemicals, its pretty efficient at cleaning up a lot of stuff. Not sure about using it for marines though.
  16. The sump pump is your filter so it needs to be on 24/7. If its not then you will have major issues with water quality.
  17. Did they calibrate it for you? Rarely can you set the temp of a Jager to say 26 and expect it to stay at that. You have to have a thermometer to set it against.
  18. The 1060 is rated at 2280lph so its not going to be much or any better than the one you have. What head height does it have to pump?
  19. What did you get? Can you turn it down or put a controller on?
  20. viewtopic.php?f=24&t=67143 so most likely others as well
  21. Unfortunately I have to agree.
  22. I worked nearly eight months in a lfs finishing just over a year ago when I fractured the disk in my back, causing it to compress my spinal column (I hasten to add this was not caused by the job). Prior to my starting I had over 30 years fishkeeping experience, in depth knowledge on many species and what I thought was a good general coverage of most of the other aquatic areas. Nothing could have prepared me for the massive range of questions I was asked about absolutely everything in the shop and more. In the way of dry goods I learnt to repair filters, replace all types of light bulbs, where starters were located, set up every type of filter available for sale, know which filters came with media included and what it was - a mere drop in the ocean. There is so much out there that one has to ask the others in the shop and not worry about doing so. I also learnt that when someone has a problem it is rare that you are given the whole story the first time you ask. Sometimes you need to ask the same questions many times, just phrase them differently and eventually the whole story will come out. I can't recommend any good sites for it but these forums might be a good starting point. They need to be relevant to NZ conditions e.g. as here in NZ you can get very few strong over the counter medications. There are also NZ facebook pages. But as with everything you read, you need to sift through the answers.
