  1. The only breeding setup I have seen for them was a 8ft or thereabouts tank, set up like a river bed with large flat rocks, a good amount of current and some plants - in other words like a river bed. The rocks had moss like river moss on them and I think the substrate was more a sand base but its been a long time - about 15 years since I saw it so I may be wrong about the substrate.
  2. You haven't done anything wrong. Putting a plastic bag on the substrate while filling the tank would have reduced but not stopped all the cloudiness. Depending on your filter it may have settled by the morning. May I ask how big the tank is and what sort of fish you are going to get tomorrow?
  3. I don't know Camtang. I didn't note that - nor whether it was more to do with the fair trading act than the tax, but of course when one registers for one the other follows. Now its been on Fair Go there is bound to be more information put out - or one would hope so.
  4. Yes thats what they are getting at - tax on income that is not being declared and culpability for goods that are incorrectly described.
  5. Not new for those who are upfront about their earnings and accept responsibility for issues, but for many others it is going to be a real change.
  6. Its basically aimed at those who buy to resell, all the back yard traders. Emails are being sent out by TM over the next month. Not sure how it will affect breeders of fish but I guess if you breed in bulk to resell and have a lot of listings you will probably have to get a second account. It is to tax the income on those sales.
  7. There is a new law change for those who sell regularly on trade me. It will need to be declared as from June. Fair Go is featuring this atm.
  8. A quick question - what type of wild discus came in to NZ last year?
  9. Only change the taps and seals if they start to leak - its a waste of money if you do it and you don't need to. The white wool pad only needs changing when it becomes so gunked up that rinsing it still leaves it all stuck together. Cannister filters only require cleaning when the flow slows right down.
  10. Flakes are not suitable for every type of fish, some are not surface feeders. Flakes are not all created equal, read the labels and compare the differences. Some have spirulina, some do not etc etc. That is why there is quite a variation in the cost of flakes. Yes, your ground dwellers will probably clean up the waste. Depending on what the flakes are made of this may or may not be good for them. If they are not cleaned up and you have decent filtration they will end up dissolving and/or going up your filter intake. I am sure you could make your own if you sourced the ingredients - try searching on the internet to see if it is possible. It may cost more in the long run though.
  11. I would tend to not go any gourami with the barbs and if you are having barbs you will probably need to get more as when they have nipped all your other fish they will then pick on each other. The Pearl Gourami can get to 14cm. I can see you have considered a group of fish that will fill all areas of the tank which is good thinking and would give a good display of colours. Perhaps you might want to look at Harlequin Tetra to replace the barbs, then you could go a smaller type of gourami for the upper tank level. The jury is out as far as I am concerned with black widows; some people find them nippy, others have no problems. Have a look and see if you can find rosy tetra or ornate tetra.
  12. I would tend to go two filters rather than one. I don't know about the FX6 but a single Fx5 wouldn't be enough. You can always paint the outside back of the tank - if you can get in behind it now. How high is it - discus prefer higher as they like a lot of water over their heads
  13. Oh okay. I just thought that a pH of 6.5 out of the tap was quite low but if you have only moved within Masterton its probably similar to what you have had in the past.
  14. Have you just moved within Masterton or are just changing to a bigger tank?
  15. If you have nitrite then when you do a water change the water chemistry won't stay the same. Nitrite is toxic to fish so you will have to get it back to zero. Do a 50% water change and make sure you add water conditioners to get rid of any chlorine or heavy metals. I assume you do have a filter running on the container? Did you acclimatise the fish when you added them. What was the pH of the previous tank and what temperature is the water at now compared to the original temperature of the tank they came from?
  16. They are back in the shops for sale viewtopic.php?f=24&t=66515
  17. I had T8 on my 100cmL x 30cmD tank with crypts, anubias, windelov fern and hair grass and it was perfect. These plants don't need high light.
  18. it will be marginal depending on how deep your substrate is and what plants you intend to keep.
  19. Sounds a good project It would be nice to have someone breeding them up here
  20. Thats what I am wondering. If there is no separate thermometer in the tank there is no way of calculating the actual temperature the heater is heating to. Water at 26 degrees is not hot to the human touch. I googled it, if you pull the button at the top up then you can adjust the temperature.
  21. Are you sure you have both sexes? I don't think they are that easy to breed and the eggs are very small so you may not know until some hatch. Given they are light sensitive looking at the tank is not that easy. Good luck though. Keen to see if you can breed them.
