  1. Jennifer used to breed them by the 100's. Ask her Well done Doh - just read the original post date

    "The List"

If you are talking something that has never been on the list before it is very difficult and costs many thousands of dollars. Proof has to be shown that the fish pose no threat to native NZ fish and fauna, can not reproduce if released by accident in to NZ waterways etc etc. Some fish have been 'added' in recent years but not of late. Added is in ' because they had been in the country many years before and documentation was available to prove this. This is the reason the Breeding Scheme the FNZAS was running was so important as documented proof was kept as to the fish in the country. Unfortunately people don't want to join clubs and can't or don't see the importance of it so it is pretty much now defunct. Once on the list there is no guarantee importers will bother to bring them in as the cost can exceed the return. If they have to bring a large number in there is not the market and if they bring a small number in the cost rises, then by the time they are in the shops people won't pay the price. Unfortunately this has been proven time and time again here in NZ.
  3. Cam, send Henward a pm - I am pretty sure he feeds massive and stuffs prawns etc for his aro Brutus. By the way, my tank didn't sell so shuffled plants around and today added 4 approx 4cm discus with more to come
  4. Keep an eye out for the odd one of these to pop up - they do come in from time to time, the last time was mid last year when I saw one in the shops (these are a couple of mine which I bred from about 4 years ago) and some of their fry at 10 weeks (the mothers were not MG)
  5. Agreed Blueether. When I thought about what might have happened I thought what might have killed the riccia rather than what killed the fish.
  6. Ammonia spike? Is your tank heated, if so check the temp
  7. That is just stunning.
  8. While reading a lot about the fish you keep is a must, not all information should come from one source. Many others, just as knowledgeable recommend keeping clowns at temperatures between 28 -30 degrees and similar with discus. Before you make comments about a persons set up you should either see it or know all about it. Apologies Camtang for taking your thread completely off topic
  9. I kept mine mostly around the 30 degrees, in the summer the tank could go over 32 - never a problem. Also at the high temperature of a discus tank white spot is not an issue. The tank is too hot.
  10. Yes, clowns are lively but they don't share the same tank space as discus, the only time they really get together can be at mealtimes but both are gross feeders so feed a decent amount and have good, but not overly strong filtration running or something like cory to clean up the leftovers My clowns tended to get together as a gang in the evenings and play - the discus were up the top half of the tank quietly doing their own thing.
  11. Well he is a very nice red half moon. As good if not better than some I see on overseas forums. Your other males are stunning as well.
  12. I kept 6 discus in with 6 clowns and there was never an issue in a 450 litre tank. I will probably do the same again in a few months.
  13. Wow Monique - you are doing a fabulous job. With the bottom guy will he not pass on the split ventrals?
  14. Dosing flourish excel? If so have you increased the amount or frequency?
  15. Who runs pressurised CO2 in their tank with discus? Have you encountered any problems, what were they and if so what did you do to remedy them? Likewise, has anyone kept dwarf chain loaches with their discus? Knowing the loaches tendency to nip, have you had any issues with them, would you recommend them in the same tank?
  16. Do you have a build up on the top of your tank of anything, even a small surface slick, algae? Have you changed anything like food, water conditioner. Flyspray?
  17. That is correct but I wonder if something is making them come up and take too much in - similar to hyperventilating? Are they all the same size/sex?
  18. Bristlenose once mid sized don't handle the high temps either. They will come up and sit with their noses out sucking air as well.
  19. The FNZAS AGM/Conference is being held on 12 April 2014 in Dunedin, hosted by our Dunedin club. Registration on the morning will commence at 10am followed by the AGM which begins at 10.30am sharp. In the afternoon attendees will be treated to a mystery tour. There will be a dinner in the evening. Everyone is welcome to attend, you need not be a club official/delegate or Executive but if you are coming please register. We would love to have a good turnout particularly from the South Island members as conference has not been held down there for a number of years. The registration form and information brochure are available below. Adrienne Dodge FNZAS Secretary
  20. I am thinking your tank is too hot for them making come to the surface to suck air. Given they shouldn't be doing this it is probably causing some sort of fit.
  21. If you split it into say 10 smaller clumps and plant them it will spread and fill in the gaps. Keep the new shoots pushed well in to the substrate otherwise they break off easily and it goes every where. It looks good when it spreads.
  22. The plant on the right could be cypress but looks a little thin for it. Let us know how they get on
