  1. Not sure anymore; probably in the vicinity of 20cm.
  2. In the Pickard & Towns Atlas of the Amphibians and Reptiles of New Zealand (published 1988), there is shown to have been a record of a snakeneck (Chelodina longicollis) in the wild that seems to have been found somewhere south of Thames. Does anyone here have further information on the record?
  3. Does nobody here own one?
  4. It is an interesting, if small, exhibit. I suspect that most of the fish kept there are wild-caught.
  5. Recently I was very surprised to see a "Dalmatian" Puffer for sale at my local vet clinic; even more surprising was its price, at $120 (I thought that such a unique species would go for far more). Out of interest, what is the minimum tank size for one of them and what are they fed? I apologise if a similar thread has been made before.
  6. Wellington Zoo's Koi were in a large pond in the chimp enclosure, and I do not remember seeing any signs about them, so they were probably only there for ornamental purposes.
  7. The Freshwater Fishes of NZ book says that Swordtails might not exist there anymore.
  8. I am aware of the fact that it is illegal to possess, breed or release Koi in New Zealand, but I know that Wellington Zoo had them until very recently; does this mean that they are legal to keep in public zoos?
  9. It is probably the latter reason, but I have rarely ever seen dead goldfish in my pond. There has seemingly been a pile-up of mud at the bottom of my pond (which has prevented the fish from reaching its depths) that would be near-impossible to clean. I do not wish to put them back in the pond out of fear for their safety, but I cannot afford a tank large enough for them either, so I am between a rock and a hard place as it stands.
  10. Currently, the only books about NZ reptiles that I own are Gill and Whitaker's New Zealand Frogs & Reptiles (1996) and Jewell's Reptiles & Amphibians of New Zealand (2008). Does anyone here know if there are any other good books about native reptiles; preferably published more recently?
  11. I am keeping them in a tank because I have kept goldfish in my pond before, but none of them have lasted long. The Comet that I have is the sole remnant of a group of ~12 that I placed in my pond in 2012 or 2013. Would that be 3ft tall, or wide?
  12. Is it possible to tell me the minimum acceptable size, then?
  13. I have two goldfish (a Comet (I suspect) and a Bronze Shubunkin) that I keep together in a tank that holds nearly 40 litres. The fish are both approximately 10cm in length, and I would like to know if my tank is large enough for them. I have already asked elsewhere twice; the first response was that the tank is not suitable for containing even one of my fish, and the second was that the tank is big enough to hold one more fish of their size. So, which is it? Thanks in advance.
  14. Those are incredible photos. Was getting an ownership license difficult?
