  1. I really like them, would like one in my discus tank but it has no lid
  2. just keep him contained for a while, the trouble is that he's been the king pin and if you keep him away for a bit then let him back in he'll be the new fish.
  3. guppies yes, don't live very long though.
  4. can you post a pic - it may be dropsy and if so no it won't.
  5. should settle but may not - not much help I know. add a couple more perhaps. he will be fine in the container permanently if he won't settle but leave him in there for about a week, when he comes out he may behave better. one thing though - they aren't fighting back are they?
  6. Agree with Amazonian - it is very time consuming and needs to be done properly or the fish won't thrive.
  7. Can you get adaptors that fit on taps with out threads and then screw into the part? Where from? I have the same problem. Thanks
  8. I also have just picked up a fluval 404 off tm for $40 buy now. $27 to get it up from ChCh to Auckland. Its nearly new, so good deals for other than cf filters do happen, just need to be patient which is okay if you don't have to have one straight away. I'm lucky though as occassionally I pop on tm during work hours which is when some of the best deals are listed. Although, in saying this, as I have said above I'm more than happy with the cf filters.
  9. Sorry, a double post  Mods can you please remove the first one, its not right.
  10. I have two outlets into my discus tank, neither has a spray bar. One puts out 1000lph and the other 1200 lph. The discus don't seem to mind it at all and occassionally hang under them being buffeted around. Its good at feeding time - spreads the bloodworms throughout the tank so there is no scrapping over the cubes!

  12. I would go aqua one but a 700 instead of a cf500, i have all the range and they are great. I think they are about $80-90 up here but not sure of shipping.
  13. its very easy to set up although might be a bit of a pig to get started at first. Make sure you fill the cannister completely to the top with water and all the hoses as well before you turn it on. Turn the inlet (to the cannister) hoses on first and then the outlet ones. First time may take a bit of sucking and spitting but from then on its sweet as long as you turn the taps on and off in the correct order. I have 4 cf 1200s, and one of each of the other sizes and they run great.
  14. Seperate the males out when they start to fight or you will come home to a tail or head left in the tank. The ones with the most damaged fins are the ones causing trouble, they are not the ones being picked on! Yes you can jar them if you do daily water changes but remember they are tropical fish and I don't know what sort of temps ChCh is getting at the moment, in a heated room around 24 degress they will be okay.
  15. I reckon its rubbish about transferring time and charges. On the odd occasion I have had to go to the dr across the road from my work which is a different health board he has claimed me as his patient to get the subsidy. When I have gone back to my own GP I have just filled in the forms again to show I am his patient and been charged the subsidised amount. I would ring around if I was you.
  16. $55 for my GP - he's out in Pakuranga (or it was, now I'm over 45 its gone down to $28 - score!!!!!) If you are a student you can register with the uni. Phone around and see what the prices are. Central city will probably be higher than some in the suburbs or under different health boards. Once you register with one health board you need to stay with them so be warned go to one doctor and stay with them.
  17. Hi, this year I have my first discus tank. I went to a well known and reputable breeder (its easier up here in Auckland). Unless you want to do heaps of water changes on the tank, pay a bit more and get bigger discus. Allow about 50 litres of water per fish for stocking. They are great fish.
  18. DT possibly going back a few generations, occassionally I get one and the only dt I have had was 4 generations back and it didn't show then. Watch the male guppies, they are going to like his tail.
  19. I used to do this and it works really well, paper napkins work as well as long as they are reasonable quality, the cheap ones just disintergrate. Use only white or they drop their colour on the mixture. Another method I used which worked for me was to use a small syringe and drip some water on top of the culture, then tilt it to run into the corner. Then syringe the worms up and put into your tank.
  20. These bring back memories of my son when he was about 2 1/2. We were at an auction rooms with him, seated while some bidding was going on. In the silence between auctions my son piped up 'Daddy, whys that man been drawing all over himself'. Looked behind and there was a great big Maori guy with tats on his face. Could have shrunk!
  21. Nice - Not a bad photo at all, its always hard to get decent photos when you want them. Mine always look better in real life too
  22. had another look, just realised that the first pic is from planet catfish, not sure about the second one and the third you can't really see the markings.
  23. Theres a new listing on tm tonight for a pleco, don't know whether anyone might be interested. The markings don't look like any I have seen but for all I know it may just be a common one.
  24. thanks, I may take you up on that
