  1. yep, they definately don't like that much current. Could you get some mesh, not too fine and tie it over the intake, so that it can take up any muck but not any fish.
  2. what do you mean - stuck in the output part of the filter? There are no places on a filter that I can think of that a female fighter could possibly fit in unless a part is missing
  3. As one who has no experience with killies could it be the high humidity that Auckland is still experiencing that is giving Barrie so many killies compared to everyone else. As a relative newcomer to Auckland - now in my 11th year - I still find it very humid and hot during the day compared to what Christchurch and I imagine the lower north island is getting.
  4. Depends what sort of condition he is in, what the weather is like, if he's in the mood and if he likes her - and - YES I AM BEING SERIOUS. Not all fighters like each other enough to spawn.
  5. well I couldn't get on from last night until just now.
  6. why yes, just now for the first time since fairly early last evening.
  7. You mean the ones that sit in the tank with the fish - if so, no, but there was some discussion on here the other day about them not working that well I think.
  8. when I had birds I needed a syringe for feeding the babies. when I went to the chemist and asked for one I had an incredibly hard time convincing them it was for drugs - it was for birds.
  9. I don't know but hopefully someone on here does
  10. Is this the new 4ft that you inherited? Pictures please!!
  11. I suppose it depends on how you think of it a hybrid car - a combination of a petrol and an electric motor (still both cars) humans - a child with an asian mother and a european father (eurasian/mixed race) could be refered to as a hybrid but I wouldn't advise it. With rams IMO the blue and the gold are two different strains otherwise they would be the same colour wouldn't they? I don't know so maybe I need to be corrected on this but I would think they if they were the same strain then they wouldn't breed true. Don't know if I explained what I think very well.
  12. pm billaney & ask what he's got. i'm also fairly certain i sent some cts (males and females) down your way last year but can't remember who to.
  13. I have some 6 week old fry at the moment and the males are just starting to scrap. You will find the trouble maker easily, they are the ones with the split fins. They are about 1-1.5cm. This morning I split the tank up and removed all the smaller fry and put them in another tank as they can not compete for food and win.
  14. Kribs are really nice fish, however when they breed they can become vicious. You could get two or so of the same sex however, although the females won't colour up as much without a male in there. My females attack the male kribs when they have eggs so would hate to think what they do to other fish.
  15. IME unless you cross a crowntail with another true crowntail female you will end up with a mixed looking bunch of offspring. A few and only a small few will throw the crowntail way but their resulting off spring probably will not. It has taken me nearly 2 years to develop a really nice crowntail line (4th generation) based upon a full crowntail male and a very nice 3/4 crowntail female. As yet I only have 3 males and 4 females from this line. IMO you would be better to pay the money and acquire a true crowntail female from a breeder than use a female that you don't know unless you have a lot of time and patience. Good luck
  16. Blue and Gold do crossbreed - I have seen the result. To the amateur eye they looked just like blue rams but the honest breeder who showed me told me they were crossed and that they would never be onsold. IMO its hard enough to keep these alive as adults, and nearly impossible to raise the fry. Why would one muck around wrecking the true type of ram by creating other strains. There seem to be enough hybrids around anyway - so many that unless you are in the know you can pay very good money for rubbish.
  17. Its a better size than my latest ct spawn - I got a whole 4 fry!!!!

    Ammonia

    Its not there, whats TLC?
  19. I mixed the propagating sand with the aquatic mix, it seemed to make it a less solid lump imo when I finally removed it from the tank. Its really up to you.

    Ammonia

I'll have to look up the stickys in the beginner section to see what TLC is and I'll get some tomorrow.
  21. Breeding can be easy, raising the fry is time consuming and can be hard work plus you need a lot of tanks and or jars.

    Ammonia

so in everyones opinion should I do another water change tonight or not. the reading appears to be slightly under .25 tonight. just wondering if I should leave it alone at that and let things kick in again.

    Ammonia

Could flourish excel affect the ammonia levels in the tank? I have been dosing daily for about 2 weeks. The only other new things in the tank are black beard algae and an abundance of snails.

    Ammonia

It is my big discus tank - 450 litres with a 80-100 litre sump and also a cf1200 external cannister filter on it. Nothing dead or missing presumed dead, everything seems okay including my one blue ram in there. I did change the filter wool on the sump on Monday night but that was all. The week before I had to change the motor on my external filter because the other one wasn't running properly - sort of on and off so I discovered. Perhaps I should rinse out the media in that filter and see if that helps? I'll test again tomorrow night and if necessary change 30-50% (hubby will be home from work so he can carry some buckets - it was his idea to have discus in the first place, not mine!!!). Test kits about 2 months old. What sort of things will the fish do if the ammonia is too high for their liking?
  25. have a read of these sites www.bcbetta.com www.bettatalk.com yes they may breed in community tanks but its not likely they will raise their young. Either they or the other fish will gobble up the eggs and the young are so small they will disappear up the filter.z
