  1. The fish seem ok generally although I lost a neon earlier in the week, he was one of the originals though. It's more I want to understand why it's doing it, Ph was measured at 7 a month ago and had been stable at that for a while.
  2. Bog wood has been there since day one with no previously seen effects. Does it get worse as it gets older? I notice the wood is getting pretty soft. The bog wood is L shaped, about 30cm long one length with 10cm the other No peat anywhere Gravel is gray with the occasional white vein in a very small amount of stones.
  3. Hi, title says it all really. 90 litre 3 foot tank, been running for a year now, 85 x 30 x 40 cm. Current stock 7 neon Tetra's, 4 glowlight Tetra's, 4 Golden Barbs, 8 various striped and spotted Danio's, 2 Bristlenose, 7cm & 5cm. Nothing new added in the last 4 months or so. Jebo external filter been running for about 3 months stocked with standard media as included in the original box, was running in parrallel with my hang on back filter for 6 weeks to bed it in. Half a dozen plastic plants, 2 plastic logs, 1 plastic rocky outcrop ornament, 1 large piece of bog wood, ~4-5 cm of stones purchased from LFS, Riverstone I think?. Tap Ph 7.4 - 7.6 and seems consistent in this range. 25-30% water changes every ~10 days. I know my stocking is close to the limit for this tank size, depending on which calculator method I use I'm either pretty much on the limit or have about 8cms spare, however I wouldn't have expected a drop of 7.6 to 6? This has only been occuring in the last 2 months or so PH was stable before that. Any suggestions from the learned forum members?
  4. My Neon's and Golden Barbs to a lesser extent do the same thing. The Neon's are at it regularly and always in the same spot, the side wall of the tank in the left front corner. It doesn't matter if I've just changed the tank or haven't done anything for a week.

    My tanks

3 foot, 85 litre 15 Neon Tetra's 3 Golden Barbs 2 Bristlenose Just getting started.
  6. My neon's are doing fine in Wellington water. I also got them from Hutt Pets and got them to do a PH test before I purchased to ensure there wouldn't be PH shock. Their PH was the same as mine at about 7.5 so it was all good. They seem happy.
  7. Well I took the filter back to the shop, and they were going to ship it back to the supplier, with no option of a replacement in the meantime. The staff memeber then went and spoke to someone else, came back and then took my filter into their work area. Removing the motor from the filter (I didn't realise you could do that) and a good cleanout with a bottle brush and away it went again. It seems the magnets were just full of poo.
  8. I have a hang on back at present (Aquaclear 50), it's working ok except when I had a moment last week when it packed it in cause the motor was full of poo, a good clean and it was away again. Otherwise it's been good, the water is clear and the fish appear happy & healthy. However one thing I don't like is it barely disturbs the water as the pour back in is very smooth, there is no current in the tank so I have huge dead spots each end of the tank, basically 2/3'ds of the tank is still. The water just gets sucked into the filter and poured back in directly above the filter inlet again. On top of that I'm about to start stocking my tank up and want something that will handle it without issue and intensive maintenance. I'd like to have something that has an inlet at one end of the tank and the outlet at the other to create a current down the tank.
  9. Any recommendations? I'm wanting to put one of these canister filters on an 85 litre 3 foot tank. Aqua One CF500 up to 125 litres ~$110 Fluval 105 up to 100 litres ~$170 I've found lots of negative comments about Fluvals generally here but can't find much about Aqua One. Thanks
  10. Hi Folks It appears my Aquaclear 50 filter has died tonight, only ~3 months old. Will be taking it back to point of purchase to discuss warranty details. In the meantime on advice from my sister and brother in law I've set up a crude filter system with my filter inlet pipe stuffed down the centre of a cut down water bottle surrounded by the noodles, carbon and filter sponge from the filter unit. A bubble stone is down the filter inlet pipe and apparently this creates a venturi effect which pulls the water through? I can't get a new filter in till tomorrow night so hopefully it will keep my babies alive till then. I went round all the supermarkets looking for water pumps or even tanks I could buy to scavenge the filters from but they all have nessecary parts missing.
  11. Hi folks Had my tank set up about 2 1/2 months now. It's a 3 foot Waterhome unit with an Aquaclear 50 filter, heater plus I've added a bubble unit to stir the surface up. After 3-4 weeks I introduced my first fish, 2 baby bn's from Danilada. They have been living happily since then and grown quite a bit. The larger of the 2 is now about 7cm (And just growing a whiskers) including tail and the smaller about 5. Last Saturday I introduced 8 Neon Tetra's from our LFS and they seemed to have settled in well. The were eating, active, good colour etc. The LFS PH and my own were the same ~7.6 so no PH shock, they tested the water while I was there. Last night I get home and the largest Neon is lying on the tank floor. I couldn't see any growths on him, he had good colour and nothing missing. The other 7 appear fine and both BN's appear fine. I did a 30% water change just in case something is amiss in the water and tested ph which was still at ~7.6. Guess it was just Neon's disease unless anyone has any advice? I was going to post a pic of the tank I took last night but my webhost is having issues.
