  1. a "little' birdie  we will have to see if the colour throws true as I know her parents were not at all yellow!
  2. another pic is due - dying to see what these are like. I have a male and female now, both yellow so may attempt a spawn in a couple of weeks when I have some more room (hopefully).
  3. crowntails show their rays from a very young age if they are going to be really good fish but not so sure about the others
  4. send a pm to Red Serenity from this forum. She's very knowledgable as far as the genetics go and she may be able to recommend some very good websites
  5. excellent, so pleased you've come on to this site.
  6. if you haven't already look at the silverdollar question further down this page. theres pictures of different types of silver dollars, maybe you have one of those.

    Blue Rams

did you manage to raise any of the young?
  8. I have some females that are incredibly possessive in my females tanks. They flare and chase and carry on. The other thing that makes them very stroppy is when there is a cold front passing through with unsettled weather like tonight. I went out there a couple of hours ago and they must have been fighting amongst each other judging by the state of their fins. Most of the time they are fine and I'm sure yours will settle or the gourami will learn to stay away.
  9. can't be certain but I would say its certainly what my rams had, not that I can help with a cure unfortunately. I did try a course of furan 2 but it had absolutely no effect except to kill of the healthy male.
  10. I'm not sure but I don't think you will have great success. In saying that I may be wrong. IMO and how I do it is that a bare bottom tank is best. The eggs are very small and during spawning drop to the bottom of the tank where the male and female pick them up and place them in the nest. I think the stones will make it very hard to locate the eggs. During the spawning it is better that there is no filter running. After the fry hatch an airline can be added and after a few days drop a sponge filter in to allow the bacteria to grow on it. At about a week attach the sponge filter. You will need infusoria (which I don't use) or liquifry for egglayers for when the fry have absorbed their eggsack and microworms or bbs for when they start swimming horizontally. Do not feed too much at any one time. Hope this helps but remember everyone does it different ways. You will need to find what is right for you.
  11. I think that perhaps the microworms aren't enough now that they are starting to grow a bit more. What about adding something else while you wait for the brine shrimp to hatch, even if its liquifry (in a small dose) or something else just to give them something extra to eat. I do this with my fighter fry right up until they are about 8 weeks old. I find that when the liquifry doesn't dissolve that this is the best as they just go down to the bottom of the tank and nibble at it.
  12. I think I know what it looks like - a white headed zit!! If its this three of the six rams I had that died developed this, it just grew bigger but never popped. They died anyway. Nothing else in the tank caught it. Must admit I was dying to take the fish out and get a needle and pop it!!
  13. Ooops.... should have read all the posts hear. Just realised I have repeated what The Conch said. Oh well, if two of us say it .....
  14. If it was me I would soak everything in bleach - budget or janola will do. Then rinse it out very well and lie in the sun to dry out and remove the last traces of bleach. Soak your bowl as well. I also soak my filter wool, sponges, bricks and bio balls before I reuse with never a problem.
  15. yes I'm sure she will. you also have the option of enclosing her in something or removing her from the tank for a few days and then putting her back in. this way she will be the 'new' fish and is guaranteed to pull her head in and behave
  16. If you are required to get the mail each day you need to check with your insurance company to make sure that your vehicle is covered for being used for work purposes. Some insurance companies don't worry, some charge more. If your premiums increase then your work is required to pay the extra. If you are using a vehicle to get the mail and your mileage increases because of it they have to pay petrol money on the extra kms you travel. If you are required to pick up the mail on the way to work in the morning they are required to pay your extra hours or pay for you to be late to work. Why don't you just join the union because then you are covered under a collective contract. You can just contact the union yourself. If you think the boss could be difficult you then have a third party to negotiate on your behalf and if the boss doesn't like it, well too bad, he doesn't have a choice.
  17. I would think that she was just hopeful that it was a male fighter Seriously though she was probably just being territorial although females do go darker when they think a male is around.
  18. if you do a direct transfer to another account it is only overnight if the other person uses the same bank ie. kwibank to kiwibank = instant, kiwibank to westpac = overnight plus usually another day to show up online.
  19. She will be ready in about three days. Its up to you when, if she is big and round you could try then other wise wait another week. Just go easy on the amount of bloodworms you give them. They are very high in fat.
  20. As an experienced rider and past owner of mares in foal I know that if a mare is feeding a foal and in foal again, not only is her life at risk but also there will be some damage to the foal she is carrying. IMO you shouldn't have so much stock you can't feed them all in times of drought, you have to balance out the good years and the bad. Heavy stocking is no excuse and you certainly shouldn't be breeding horses if you don't have the grass and or the means to purchase adequate feed. Horses can survive on dry feed (grain etc) which may be expensive but you need to be prepared for it. (Right, now thats off my chest I'll move on!! )
  21. I found a good feed of bloodworms and a decent water change with cold water always resulted in a spawn.
  22. That was sad to hear. You should end up with a few like him though. I am assuming he was imported and not locally bred. There seems to be a pattern emerging with the imported fish not lasting as well. He may have used his last reserves hatching his fry but be positive, it won't always happen and you will be able to use his fry to breed on.
  23. If you haven't already taken him out leave him there. Some males don't hang right under the nest but go back and forward tending to the eggs. You won't see all the eggs unless the light is right and you use a decent sort of magnifying glass. If it is warm enough the eggs will start to hatch in just over 24 hours and can take up to 48 hours to finish happening. The male will move them everywhere, can hold them in his mouth for a very long time. If he has eaten the eggs it can be for several reasons 1. they were not fertilised - this may happen especially at the first attempt if he doesn't roll the female over. She also may release the eggs by herself 2. he was hungry, needs to be in better condition 3. he likes the taste of eggs and will always do it. I mentioned that I had about 6 ct fry hatch from two spawnings. These were from several hundred eggs, one of my males just about never rolls the female over so the eggs don't become fertilised and the other male is a confirmed egg eater. However there are still a few live fry from their spawns. Even if you can't see any live fry after 48 hours look after the tank like there are and put in green water/liquifry or whatever you use. You may be surprised as it will take the best part of a week to see what is there. I have ended up with at least 9 fry at one week, each day I see another.
  24. I've never seen foals so small at this time of the year. Will contact the SPCA tomorrow.
  25. an honest suggestion - leave him alone! the more you go back and forward peering and moving things, the less likely anything is to happen. don't you sometimes want privacy if the weather is like up here at the moment and it is unsettled let her out this evening around this time and with luck they may spawn in the morning. they can successfully raise fry with out a decent sort of bubble nest
