    Ammonia

Tested my tank tonight for the first time in about 3 weeks, pH 6.0, nitrates nil,, nitrites nil ammonia .25 -.5. Shock, horror!! Have done a 30% water change tonight, also did one on Monday night, tested again, still at .25. Do I continue on changing it nightly until it goes back to nil. At this stage a 30% change requires me to bucket 150 litres of warm water through the house. Or do I do a bigger change tomorrow, if so will the pH rise as the water comes out the tap at around 7.6.

    hi

Not much chance at the moment, our home computers down. My son who is in IT is taking forever to build the new one. In the meantime I have to borrow a computer to use, note no TM listings this week
  3. I'd leave them alone if I was you - you must be doing it right!
  4. Thanks Ron I'm made of the hard stuff am I probably 30-40 cardinals and was thinking maybe some rummynose as well. Don't want to take the focus off the discus though so will have to be a fine balance.

    hi

I get more double rays with my crowntails than anything else. However I have a new male so it will be interesting to see what my new spawns from him and my young females turn out like.
  6. Take the parents who is not caring for them out and leave the other one to raise them. The only thing is you won't be able to put the other parent back with them until they are big enough that he/she can't eat them.
  7. I have a canoe with a hole in it.... ...good for looking at fishies though
  8. are you talking blue rams or bolivian rams and what are the pencilfish like in the tank with the discus. My discus are lovely in the tank but its a bit empty looking at the moment.

The extra lights not for the plants, the tank has a black back to it and the pigeon discus tend to hang out near the back of the tank. Its so its easier to see from the couch during the day when the suns streaming into the room - I'm fussy!
  12. I love fish except for oysters and mussels (they don't really count as fish anyway).
  13. You have to add this first as it is like clay. I got mine from Bunnings and Kings Plant Barn up here. Mixed it up with Daltons propagating sand. IME when you want to get it out its hard work. I wouldn't use it again, makes cleaning the tanks harder as if you need to do a deep clean of the gravel you stir it up.
  14. Jansens has them in today and Hollywood did on Saturday, not the same lot I think as they were different colours.
  15. good luck with them, i can't even keep the adults alive and fry are supposed to be harder to raise.
  16. I make that approx 265 litres. At 1.5 watts per litre you could go 2 x 200 watt heaters or perhaps 1x300 and 1 x 200 to give a bit more if necessary

    hi

All of the above types are available here in New Zealand and all of them are up here in the North Island as well. I have one male in all my females tanks and they co-exist with up to 40 odd females each. Yes the females do get a little touchy at times with each other but thats nature and nothing major ever happens. IME adult males with long fins stuggle in strong currents and tend to lie on their sides at rest.

On this tank the cost isn't really an issue. However I can't suspend lights from the ceiling as we don't own this house. The other thing is that the tank has a wooden frame (without a lid) around the top of it and the lights would have to fit within this which means they pretty much have to sit right on the glass supports that go across the top of the tank.

    Help

Would have thought that if it was internal they would have been bloated. How old are the baby bristlenose? The guppy may just be coincidental. Whats the waterflow like, maybe you could try an airstone. I don't know a lot about BN - I do have them but they just seem to look after themselves.
  20. damn, bu--er and everything else. I've just read this now.
  21. I breed fighters the guppies and kribs breed themselves
  22. picture? dropsy? (don't know if cats get that). Description of what it looks like might help if you can't get a pic.

    hi

hi, have a look at the following sites for good info www.bcbetta.com www.bettatalk.com really good sites, good pics and info. Unfortunately most of the fighters we get here don't look like these but with dedicated breeding programes NZ could probably get there.
  25. How often do you clean your filter and do you have the media that comes with it i.e. ceramic noodles, bioballs and sponges in it or do you have something else.
