  1. true, simple and hardy. My husband used to have a tank with my angels in it in the science department. It went well until someone decided to put the cork off a chemical bottle into it.
  2. I get it on the tops of my tanks from time to time if there it no surface movement.
  3. Thanks, thats why I asked on here. I'm too old to believe everything I read, would rather rely on others opinions and experiences.
  4. A single male with a couple of girls is fine, of late I've had a single male and female in a tank with a few plants and no problems at all. They do make nice community fish but guppies/angels and barbs do tend to nip at the males tails.
  5. On some internet sites it says that killies are suitable tankmates for discus, in particular it lists the gardneri (sp?). What do you think about it, is it possible or would they be too small (or in my case likely to end up in the sump overflow, going in the grill) and likely to be eaten by the discus. What about the temp of the tank? I haven't really seen live killies and only know what I've read on here about them.
  6. Hi If yoou/they do decide to go for a siamese fighter I'm happy to send a male (and a couple of females if they want) free of charge down to them.
  7. I lost the other male of my blue rams last night so down to one blue female and a gold pair. Guess I'll have to try something else in my discus tank instead.
  8. Went out this morning and the eggs were all gone so I guess they weren't fertile and she ate them. They didn't look to be developing last night like the other spawn I have. Very interesting to see though.
  9. Don't know anything about flagfish but usually if pop eye is only in one eye its probably been caused by some sort of injury. Both eyes and its some sort of problem. Sorry, really can't help you more on this.
  10. Tonight she's still looking after them, picking them up and putting them back in the nest. The nest has grown, twice as many bubbles as before. She has to be blowing them, theres no one else there to do it! I don't know that they are fertile though, used my magnifying glass and can't see eyes or anything yet. Time will tell. If they hatch I will be interested to see what happens - whether she will tend to them or eat them. If they don't I'll set her up to breed properly, as this wasn't a planned pairing, and see if the roles go back to the norm. At least I know she's a female as I was doubtful.
  11. Fighters I've just come from out in the fish room this morning - she is still tending the nest and he was still on the other side. He went flying over to her and she shooed him away so I've contained him along with the other surplus fish in the tank. All the eggs are there, she's moving them and looks to be cleaning them as well. If I hadn't seen it I wouldn't believe it.
  12. Don't ask me - these are two of the ones I got from Gabe. I just haven't moved them from the quarantine tank yet. The other two are in jars within this tank as well.
  13. Opinions please - I have had a male and female in a tank for a couple of weeks now. In the last few days the male has blown a huge bubble nest - about 12 inches by 6 inches. Today the female blew a little bubble nest on the opposite side of the tank, its only tiny, about 2cmx 1.5cm (the nest that is). Tonight while I was at tennis they spawned, or I assume they spawned. There are about 20 eggs. They are in her nest and she is looking after them. His nest has no eggs in it. He is not interested in her nor her nest and eggs. I guess I will leave them to it. Will be interesting to see if they hatch or if they are eaten.
  14. I think you will find that the lighter ones have taken up more of mums colouring and will darken off a bit as they mature and the darker ones will look more like the male. I still get spawns that throw back 4 generations to the original cambodian males I had at one stage and normally I have a mix of lighter and darker ones. In saying that I have one spawn here of a whole 12 fry that have all taken up the females colour, the male was the red one I got off you fish_fingers and the female was cambodian (flesh coloured body) with red fins.
  15. I'd take him out if I was you - ifs she's released her eggss they're not going to be fertile anyway and if a female attacks the male he's put off mating. Try again in 11 or so days.

    New Tank

thanks Ron, the discus seem happy, its a shame they can't talk.
  20. agree about a lot of reading and doing whats right for you. It takes me over 1/2 hour to fill my tanks anyway, 20 buckets of water from kitchen sink to lounge tank
  21. I use Aqua Plus water conditioner when doing my big water changes. A 2 litre pump container costs $46, pm me if you want to know where I get it at that price. One pump does about 300 litres and I add it to the first bucket of water I'm putting in. I do use a thermometer though to make sure the water from the tank is about the right temperature.

    New Tank

I'm pretty happy with it so far but the water is not as clear as I would like. It looks good from front on but when you look from the end is a bit cloudy. I've got 9-10 sterbai corys, 3 bristlenose and a pair of blue rams in there at the moment, have taken the gold rams out to have a go at breeding. Still keen to add 30 cardinals to the tank at some stage but in no hurry. The twisted val is taking off, runners going well and the cabomba is nearly at the top. Anyone suggestions about the water clarity appreciated and also about triming and dividing both the val and cabomba
  23. I have my first discus tank which I set up between Xmas and New Year after asking a lot of questions on this forum and reading heaps - most of it I didn't understand  Use the search function on here and type in 'discus'. There are pictures of it on here under 'New Tank'. Everything is going fine, the discus (I have 6) seem happy and healthy. I have planted it but not totally covered the gravel as the tank needs to be kept clean. I vacuum every week and change 25-30% of the water, around 140 litres once a week. In this weather I have to top the tank up every few days, about 10-12 litres at a time as I am running a sump and the level drops too low. I am also running a cf 1200 external filter, making a flow rate of about 2200lph on a 450 litre tank. My pH out of the tap is 7.6, the tank sits at 7.2. I was advised not to mess around with the pH as it was better to have it stable than changing all the time. I do have driftwood in the tank. I have a small amount of aquatic mix under some of the gravel but wouldn't put it down again as it makes vacuuming harder. I use flourish but will change to flourish excel very shortly to encourage the swords to grow faster. With regards to you getting smaller fish I was told they need daily water changes to keep them healthy and growing. Budget  what budget - estimated so far nearly 2k

    Kribs

Yes they can. The young pair I have are about 3.5cm and spawned for the first time last night. Doesn't appear to be huge but I can't see the eggs properly.
