  1. Depending on your filter put some filter wool either over or in the intake strainer, that will absorb some of the green. You may also need to rinse the filters wool in some of the water from the tank (put it in a bucket or something) as it will need cleaning out a bit.
  2. My theories to losing lots of fighters at this age - bacteria ammonia build up in the tank lack of properly developed ventrals when they start to come up for air cold air (pneumonia) insufficient feeding Bad development of ventral fins (as in no ventral fins or only one) water quality not good enough during development nippy young fighters will often take off anothers ventrals genetic (you can use a fish without ventrals and still produce perfect fish) There are probably another thousand theories out there but these are the ones I have, in the past, observed.
  3. not many but there are other hiding places
  4. do you mean its stomach has sucked in underneath. I believe its a sign of worms.
  5. I have 4 discus in a 450 litre tank and the penang eruption spends its life constantly sparring with 2 of the discus.
  6. Yes, I've read about the issues it can cause putting two double tails together. Apparently you are better putting a double tail to a single tail that carries the double tail gene. Theres always a high percentage of deformities with double tails anyway.
  7. Very nice - its like the one of mine that committed suicide a couple of weeks ago. Is it male or female? You'll have to come see mine next time you're out this way.
  8. Was a nice evening and a great guest speaker.
  9. I think you might be talking about the indian fern which has another name as well (this currently eludes me in my getting old age
  10. I think one puffer would be ideal. I had 6 in my 54 litre tank but the 4 biggest have disposed of the 2 smallest (they must have needed munchies during the night). My original 2 I purchased from a forum member as they were scrapping in the 34 litre tank. Not much aggression seen during the day in the bigger tank but obviously night time is a bit different!
  11. Good video Sam and I love the way you grow your plants in the bb tank. Great photo Dreams.
  12. From what I remember when I had finches was that you need to keep an eye on the younger birds as the older sibling will take the lions share of any food provided by the parents.
  13. I googled it and this is what I came up with. It could have started off as the image in the first link perhaps: http://www.fishlore.com/fishforum/fresh ... sease.html http://www.tropicalfishkeeping.com/trop ... ing-46139/
  14. IME I find that the surface leaves of my tiger lotus deteriorate in a similar way if I add excel to the tank too close to where they are which has lead me to be believe that they are in some way burnt.
  15. I'm down late Thursday night so I can check out the show on Friday, go to the meeting Sat morn and visit my dad Sat afternoon
  16. I took a break of about 12 years as with 3 children under 5 I was too busy. I'd always had male fighters when I did have tanks going and when I started up again I purchased my first female fighter and I've never looked back. In the last few months I have started to increase the variety of fish I keep.
  17. Love the background - my 5ft was looking like that but seeing as its in the tank crawl in a couple of weeks I cleaned it tonight
  18. sounds good - its nature working at its best without all the artificial and harmful additives that chemicals have.
  19. Yay!! my knowledge must be improving because thats what I thought it was as well - its about time!!
  20. Saw it, studied it but wouldn't use it myself. The grill will trap the crud under it and it doesn't run a filter system like an under gravel filter so there is no water circulation. The tank itself and the divider might be okay if a small filter was run on it but I don't have a calculator handy to work out the volume of water it would hold. As you say no heater but people still think you can keep fighters without a heater in NZ (which you can do if you have a well heated room). Personally I think I'll stick to what I have
  21. A great log about the set up of your marine tank and the photos are brilliant. Do you have any fish in there to replace the ones your lost?
  22. Thanks - there are about 5 more, one of them being a rusty pink colour and the other a solid aqua green but they wouldn't even think about posing for the camera. I've got about 12 females that are the aqua colour as well.
  23. heres some of my just 3 month old boys (they are full brothers), and their colours are not photo shopped but the true colouring.
  24. Well I've got free male kribs. Let me know if you want one. Top quality, young but big. Pop eye often clears up by itself if you keep the fish in good water conditions. I've also used melafix with some success after a fish has taken a knock to the eye and its bled into the eye itself.
