  1. All you can do is keep an eye out on trademe and the sites selling fish and look for the best breeders.
  2. Thanks for the info. I know about angel genetics as I have bred thousands of them in a previous life. The reason you don't see many double blacks is that they are usually weaker and slower to develop so most people would breed them to something recessive like gold. As I said earlier, if you breed black to black you will get some. Throw in a long fin gene or two and you will have a spectacular fish. Best to breed then from the male.
  3. I assume you mean angels with two black genes. If you breed blackto black you will get some. They will be the weaker and slower growing ones.
  4. If you get a jaeger heater you will need to set it before you use it.
  5. Sorry about that but sympathy anyway.
  6. Lucky snails but unlucky daughter in law, my sympathy to Dena. Hope her frogs are enjoying the heat down here.
  7. I could be wrong but it looks like Lagarosiphon major to me.
  8. Welcome back and enjoy your time here.
  9. I used to grow heaps of it emersed and it looks like H z emersed. It looks similar both ways but the leaves are easily damaged in postage if grown submersed but not so when grown emersed. It converts readily.
  10. Heteranthera zostaerafolia, Hydrocotyle leucacephala and the swords could be anything. (CHECK THE SPELLING)
  11. This sounds like the same situation as with the xanthochromic green and gold frogs so I am wondering if it is similar genetics. If only mine would get romantic we might learn a bit more.
  12. Where does the number 8 wire go?
  13. In Asia they often put a light above the pond and the moths strike it and fall into the water.
  14. When tanks are made the structural glue is done first and the tank will be sound and waterproof. The glueline I suspect you are talking of is added later to make the tank look better and to be more readily cleaned. It should be OK
  15. You do not need any permits from MPI or MAF to breed and sell goldfish or approved tropical fish. You may need a resource consent from your local council if you wish to sell to the public. It would cover such things as car parking if it was required. I have in the past bred 50000 tropical fish per year but I sold them all wholesale to retailers so there were no problems with car parking etc.
  16. Watch the voltage as well. We bought something from America a while ago, checked that it was our voltage and was assured that it was. Didn't use it for a while and when we plugged it in all we got was a puff of smoke.
  17. It used to be called common chain sword but it seems today that it is no longer common. It bruises easily when transported.
  18. Does anyone have the figures for how many dead shrimps are equivalent to two small fish? I suspect you might be better off urinating in to the tank. Each to their own.
  19. In a terrarium heating the water is enough to raise the ambient temperature to a suitable level. I have not grown Java fern but have many other plants with succes
  20. There are many things being set up when you cycle a tank and establishing the start of the nitrogen cycle is only one of them. Bacteria in a bottle, fish food or a dead shrimp actually has little to do with the state the tank will be in when it has cycled. Two small fish and some patience will establish conditions required by two small fish and nothing else will. Some people have convinced the world that cycling slowly and showing some patience is cruel but how cruel is it to put your fish into a tank full of the wrong bacteria? I used to breed 50000 tropical fish a year and have never artificially cycled a tank yet. Every one to their own I guess.
