  1. In those days they imported Barclaya and some Aponogeton as well ---I used to propagate Barclaya and Apoogeton crispus in a previous life.
  2. Bob from Redwoods imported many crypts years back when it was worth it but many have gone west. One of my favourites was nevili nevilli.
  3. Welcome an enjoy your time here.
  4. 1&2 look like crypts and 1 may have been grown emersed. The leaves on each may melt but remove the dead stuff and theroots may gro new submersed leaves. The third is hairgrass that has been grown emersed (common commercially---has seed heads) Will mainly die if left in a large clump as it will not get enough light. Spread it out in to small bunches of half dozen and it should start throwing runners.
  5. We are about ready to bounce back but still may not have any fish for a bit. People sometimes think that the stress in Christchurch is about the possibility of aftershocks. EQC are experts at making sure you get your share in other ways. After we paid a heap to get the house painted after some weatherboards had to be removed to repair part of the foundation and EQC only took responsibility for the weatherboards on two walls and allowed enough for a quick sand and a spray job. We put out thousands to get the whole place painted so it didn't look so stupid. The paint started blistering off in about 6 months and we have just completed a repaint at double the original cost. EQC have paid about one third of the repaint cost. The stress comes mainly from waiting 3 years for repairs then arguing for about the same time about the repairs. We are one of the many but are still grateful that we are not living in a garage or car like some still are.
  6. There is a similar problem with double glazing to cut down on noise transfer. The noise causes one pain to vibrate and the next pain picks up a sympathetic vibration. The way to make the double glazing work to avoid noise transfer is to have two pains of different thickness and have one at a slight angle to the other. There is actually a thin layer of still air next to a single pain of glass and that can act as a heat insulator if that layer is protected by the likes of a curtain close to the glass.
  7. Peoples circumstances change. They changed drastically for a lot of people in Christchurch a few years back.
  8. I could be wrong but I understood that double glazed windows had a vacuum between the glass to avoid convection currents of air.
  9. Malachite green is named after the copper ore malachite because they are the same colour.
  10. You may have a problem with condensation between the layers which could look a bit rough.
  11. Copper is only a problem if the water is acid. It is usually acid in built up areas because of sulphur dioxide from smoke.
  12. Agree with above. For some species it is good and others no good. It is generally soft and slightly acid.
  13. What you are doing is good. Just make sure you do not overfeed and pollute the water whichever way you feed.
  14. Filter sand is probably sharp. If you use sand you are best with greywacke river sand as it is inert and round. I have used soil in the past and it was a disaster so good luck.
  15. I think it will be a disaster as too much organics present.
  16. My understanding is that you cannot breed, sell or advertise for sale blue tounges in the Auckland area.
