  1. They need the basking area to be warmer than the water to encourage them to come out of the water and bask in the heat. This is the best place to put the UV so that get that at the same time. I used a ceramic for heat (on a thermostat and on 4/7) and an energy saver uv or a tube ( on for 12 hours) If the wee fan is one of those ux/fans I would think they are all but useless as a source of uv.
  2. someone on facebook was offering it. Put an add on the wanted to buy section on here--- I think there is a bit about..
  3. I am just getting it growing in a terrarium with frogs. A bit early to learn much so far. It came as a leaf with a root and I have only recently spotted the first shoots of a new plant coming away. It is growing with Hydrocotyle leucocephala on a media of potting mix covered in fine black sand. I am hoping both plants will be strong enough to survive the frogs jumping all over them and will give some hiding places so they are less likely to try eating each other. Successful so far.
  4. Are you feeding whiteworms? It looks like the plants you have are lagarasiphon which is an unwanted organism. You should be able to find Elodea Canadensis in your streams, it is pretty common in Canterbury and is permitted.
  5. Start from scratch and leave your problems behind.
  6. It looks to me like it is one of the tanks with a plastic ring around the bottom which keeps the glass bottom from sitting on the stand. You therefore need to properly support the ring so I would go with the plywood suggestion and even put a bead around the edge of the ply to make it even safer. (advice from shaky town)
  7. Many thanks for the advice. I had previously sprayed the food with water until it was wet but had no success. I flooded the whole container and left it for about 20 minutes then tipped all the excess water off and the next day there were worms all over the glass over the food like there used to be. I am very happy.
  8. Thanks for the advice, I will try that. I would think that any Anubius could hybridise with any other but only by cross pollination of flowers, the same as with the swords. I am down to one small colony of grindals at the moment (out of five) because I gave some away and I found that a good colony will out compete with the mites but when they get run down a bit the mites seem to win. I have very few plants at the moment as they got swallowed up by the shakes and the aftermath. I only have plants in a few terrariums ---no aquariums and the emersed setup is full of other stuff..
  9. They breed after a brumating (colder) period usually in spring/early summer. They then need to be grown up until they morph---time is dependant on feeding. I used to sell mine at 6 weeks after morphing. There are not many about but I would think a bit less than a year from now. You might be lucky if a breeder has manipulated the cooling off period or they have been kept for a longer period. They are pretty small when they first morph.
  10. Not really the time of year you might find babies about.
  11. Congratulations to all those elected. Well done.
  12. I did not see it but I would be curious to see what AIR NZ charged. They usually charge the best part of $200 to take livestock.
  13. Don't forget that winter is coming and they may wish to brumate. If they do they need to brumate properly and will not eat if the temperature is low enough.
  14. I have bred a lots of cories and they are fine on sand, but I used greywacke river sand that is fine and round not crushed and sharp.
  15. I am after a starter culture of grindal worms can anyone help please? Mine have been taken over by mites and I cannot get rid of them. Hope to start another clean culture.
  16. I have seen a frog eat another frog the same size and all I could see was the feet sticking out. I pulled the victim out and it survived but you would be asking for disaster to put small ones with larger ones. These were green and golds as well.
  17. I would just remove the white bits and leave the rest to get on with life. Plants need light, and it maybe that they are not getting enough or it could be that the problem arose before you bought the plant. I have seen this plant grow well in just natural light in the past.
