  1. I have used sand as a substrate in many tanks for many years in heavily planted tanks and have never stirred it up or had any problems.
  2. Welcome and enjoy your time here.
  3. Second hand filters would have as much risk of importing diseases as the water that imported fish are in. That water is required to be specially treated before disposal. It may be that they were not declared as second hand.
  4. It was the second hand equipment that was the problem as it could carry diseases.
  5. We have a commercial breeder here who has 4 foot tanks across a 2 foot stand so there is a foot each side not supported at all. Lost a lot of tanks during the quakes but has since glued the tanks to the stands and it has gone through a couple of fives with only loss of water. I had a friend who had an import business with large tanks on 50 mm round pipe stands will poly between and no other support and never had a problem---before the shakes. I am a bit paranoid and had my tanks fully supported on 25mm shelving on steel stands fully supported. You pays the money and takes your pick.
  6. The logfires only have a little booster rather than a caste iron wet back like granma used to have (which kept the hot water cylinder boiling)
  7. Interesting as they may be I can't see people feeding them very easily considering that they eat only one type of ant and can eat up to 3000 a day. Good luck feeding one.
  8. He had Maori as well as Australian Aboriginal blood and a few others. Getting caught with trout in the frying pan is a bit of a give away---wouldn't matter what your heritage was. I don't have Maori blood but I have never been caught.
  9. There is a small branch goes into the Sewyn at Coes Ford. Upstrem on the Lincoln side. Used to catch eals there when I didn't know any better. Had a rellie got fined for catching trout there illegally as well--silly man was frying it up when Mr PLod arrived---almost got a bit added to the fine for asking the judge if he could take the evidence home with him.
  10. The whole approval thing was a bit of a farce from the beginning. A whole lot were approved after testing without a wetback then people installed them with a wetback (which takes a lot of heat from the combustion chamber) and the emissions were a lot higher. There have since been a few invented which cannot pass approval, even though their emissions are far better than the approved ones, because their loading methods are different to those required by the test. They need to change the test but they are too busy supporting the land developers that want to get rich from creating thousands more sections than the City needs. Christchurch is the only city I know of where the expensive land is by the airport and the cheap stuff is by the sea.
  11. It is to make a standard test. The problem is that there are new appliances being created that do not work in the way that the standard was developed for.
  12. Welcome and I hope you enjoy your time here
  13. Must admit I have not heard of that. The usual way to morph them is by added iodine or thyroxin in one form or another.
  14. The jury have heard a lot more evidence than we have. I think it is dangerous to assume that someone is guilty because the police went to all the trouble of charging them.
  15. There is a problem here at the moment with the requirements for approving new solid fuel heaters. You have to add a log at certain time intervals which cannot be done if you are not adding logs. I don't know how the pallet fires got approved.
  16. This is P44---"Don't tucha da hair"
  17. Has it got a Fiat Bambina motor in the boot?
  18. Move to Christchurch--most of our suburbs are frequently moving.
  19. Some tetras can be fin nippers
  20. Yes. Many people keep them in quart preserving jars.
  21. I have one I made up a similar way for the kitchen sink and they are good. Can provide water at the right temperature and no chlorine again now so straight in is good. Accept I don't have any tanks operating but it will happen.
  22. looks like damage with a touch of fungus. Will be a sitter for finrot unless the water conditions are pristine. Might pay to isolate and treat with wunder tonic or furan2 ---both have ingredients that will treat both.
