  1. A lot of the meds we use a re the same as Asian or African meds The Africans might chew the leaf, the Asians might make soup from the leaf and the Europeans make a synthetic copy in the form of a pill.
  2. The pet shops in the "poorer areas" seem to do best but in my dealings with the local petshops they (like a lot of retailers) seem to be struggling.
  3. I had a massive and bad bruise on my arm when younger that my Chinese friend cured with a bottle of traditional medicicine in about a quarter of the time I would have expected. I have also been to a Chinese trained doctor who put three fingers on my pulse and proceeded to give me my complete medical history. Some of it may be myth but european medicine has a lot to answer for sometimes.
  4. What right do we have to own the water---we do not look after it very well. Most of the rivers around here are not fit to swim in let alone drink the water. We are too busy exporting baby formula to china at any cost to waterways and convincing Asian mothers that breast feeding is not what they are for. It is better to feed their babies formula made with contaminated water. The newest method of birth control?
  5. An Aquarium is dead load (except in Christchurch)
  6. We have a fish breeder here that maintains quite a large colony of ants. He has a lot of tanks and has figured out how to keep the tanks whole during the shakes but still loses a few fish. They tidy things up very quickly. My friend is after beetles and I think we now know what to look for so thanks for the help---I have passed the info on.
  7. They also usually imported from Asia. The market is so small for freshwater and marines that we are way down the list. Why would exporters bother when they can fill a jumbo jet going to the US.
  8. All is OK --posty must have stopped off at the pub and was a bit late. Looking good.
  9. Many moons ago when I was breeding white clouds in big numbers (both in ponds over summer and tropical tanks) I found that they were relatively easy to get from tropical to ponds but very difficult the other way. Would this be the problem?
  10. Wunder tonic has quinine as well. Mepacrine also works.
  11. One problem with your idea is that if you load up your tank with microbes they will probably be aerobic and use up all the oxygen and you will end up with the same problem as having a bacterial bloom. Your idea is not silly however. In a previous life when I was breeding heaps of fish I had an idea not disimilar for fish with very small fry such as fighters.I came across a number of illegally dumped sets of transfusion equipment. I realised that the saline bags, tubes and flow adjusters were what I had been secretly desiring for ages. I took them home and set them up with infosoria and had them dripping into tanks 24/7 Worked well until they got on to brine shrimp nuplii and microworms. This avoids overloading with oxygen users. Time to start chatting up the nurses you know.
  12. How long has he been doing the yoga then?
  13. I use a one sided razer blade. Should be easy enough in a corner because there should not be much glass/glass contact.
  14. They should stay in the pond because they very rarely morph.
  15. You don't want airstones they just block up. Using the bottles upside down--when you turn the air off the nuplii go to the bottom and the shells to the top so you just run the nuplii off through the air hose.
  16. Vets are required to "see the patient" before prescribing.
  17. F15guy if you were able to add your location to your profile it would help people figure out where "around here" is and they might be able to give a helping hand.
  18. With most problems with fish, the sooner you get on to it with the correct med the better so you will find that importers and serious fish breeders will have a pretty good first aid kit ready to go (and usually with many meds you will not get from a pet shop such as antibiotics and treatments for parasites). Meds in powder, tablet or capsules are usually stable for many years. Tablets and capsules are the best because the amounts are known and make dosing easier.
  19. A fair way to push your bike I would think.
  20. Fish don't get a 100% water change all the time in a river because there are also fish upstream. What I meant was that wunder tonic is not a magic med but is useful for treating quite a few ailments other than fungus (such as whitespot, velvet etc). Myself I prefer to use a specific med for a specific problem. "Use the least amount of the least toxic med that will do the job properly." I agree that with discuss there are meds in addition that would be useful. Perhaps one of the discus experts such as discusguru might let us know what would be best for what.
  21. Not sure how but all the experts (including the guy behind the NZ ones) seem to think so.
  22. I would think a 25 or 40 watt bulb should do the trick. I would use a bucket or similar with water and a heater/thermostat (in a poly box if you want to save power). Don't forget they need the right temperature, aeration and light to get a good hatch.
