  1. will be stealing cuttings out of tanks today at work and will introduce 5 young Leopards tonight, and install heater (and turn on filter, was supposed to this morning but forgot) THEN i might take a pic btw need help thinking of a name for my Dwarf puffer
  2. I'd rather normal harlequins to that (btw the "Espei" are currently on the wholesalers lists as "Gold Harlequins)
  3. Just came back and turned the lights on for the first time in 3 days, cant see a single patch of cyano any more... Water change today and hopefully it is all sorted.
  4. Tank setup and filled, gone for a 50/50 raised back section for a bit of interest, water all cleared and awaiting plants tomorrow. might stop off at local creek and see what freebies I can find
  5. lol, woops, a old heater I have sitting around, 50W, made in NZ, Reliant. could buy an equivilent heater for arounf $10 on trademe total $49
  6. ok, have wanted to do this for a while. a fun fish tank for under $50 this has used a bit of luck and I Am not factoring in any staff discounts or freebies (except for the 1L of gravel I am using which I was going to throw away otherwise) one of my dreams has been to own a Dwarf puffer, and with my 21L marine setup closing down I thought this was a perfect time. This tank and Filter cost me $15 from the local markets (the 2 goldfish ended up living happily in a pond) so total budget so far is $15 Gravel is free due to me cleaning out a pond, but anyone can get 1-2L of free gravel anyways. my Light is a Desk Lamp from bunnings for $10 and the bulb is from by G/F;s closet (shhhhhh... I told her it was blown) Budget so far is $25 The fish will be 1x Puffer ($14) And 5 x Leopard fish (I have a breeding setup to evacuate to if required) Live snails provided by other tanks Budget = $39 including livestock.... pics once i've finished rinsing Gravel and tank.
  7. off to rinse out old tank and start setup for my dwarf puffer its a 22L that used to be my local marine, going to me a low tech medium planted setup using a "Splish splash starter kit" a home modified clear view 200 filter and some gravel from a pond i'm dismantling atm ( loaded with blackworms, hope a few survive) and a $10 desk lamp (currently running a warm white light, will be changeing to a cool white when the next house bulb blows) total costing: Tank And filter $15 for local market Gravel $0 Plants $0 (off cuts from other tanks/ work tanks) Fish $14 for Puffer, Leopard fish free (will remove if problems occur) Snails $0 from breeding setup Light $10 from bunnings, bulb, free, stole from girlfriends closet Yay lotsa fun for $39
  8. aren't plants living????
  9. Lysa is better kept as a marginal plant anyways, plant it near the surface and it will spread and droop down into the water, plant it above the water and you have a lovely carpeting plant, that droops into the water, likes a well drained but damp soil does well planted into river gravel that is permanently damp/wet 1cm under the surface
  10. big sack of lime chip cheap and effective...
  11. i'm more in favour of "Pet Keeping Licenses" instead. almost all dog attacks can be put down to bad owners. tbh i'm all for fish keeping to be controlled as well, im kinda sick of
  12. why is it crashing??? no wood, most pH crashes are caused by biological material degrading. are you using RO water??? would try lime chip though, stone and water world have it rather cheap
  13. :iag: annoys me though the amount of control on dogs but none on cats, one thought my new vege patch was a sand box, crap all over the lawn.... if a dog did it instant $500 fine
  14. two things... post some pics of them, especially pic that show their head size in relation to their bodies... or the sure fire way is to wait till they drop "sperm" packages in the enclosure (look kinda like white poo), if so then they are 100% male.
  15. some plants have trouble with this though, water wisteria (Hygrophilla difformis) is one that normally struggles. but Polysperma will change in an afternoon. what plant are you trying it on???
  16. do you have large amounts of driftwood in the system??? that will drop both your hardness and pH I always use lime chip as it actively changes pH as well... or you can use standard Baking Soda from the super market to raise both pH and hardness if your tank is designed for soft water (and by that im confused) then why are you making the water hard???
  17. so... in short... I have a cat, not all cats are doing major damage, controls need to be put in place and I like chat style forums.....
  18. +1, imo the corners especially are only for holding filters and gear,
  19. ahhahahahaha soo true. my mate was selling "Garden Water" he collected off his roof for $10 per 50L up to the floods. to give you a rough Idea, this bridge was completely underwater (probably by up to 4m), it is another 12M above the normal river level, and it was in one of the lesser affected areas
  20. +1, looks tough, but a diagonal brace even just on the back would make it heaps stronger in the event of side to side movement. Also as the stand is larger than the tank, allow the tank to slide a little before hitting any edging will save you a lot of grief
  21. yeah, god forbid we have a sheep go on a rampage
