  1. "Ducktape is like the FORCE. It has a light side, and a dark side, and it holds the universe together." This is an easy way to sum up my wife. She has her moments where everything goes together perfectly, we agree and everything is great. She also has her moments where we disagree, and she points out ALL of the problems with my plan. She holds my universe together. I need the positives to keep me motivated, the negatives to remind me of things I need to fix, and a jandal every now and again so she can vent her frustration :slfg: My fish have become a very large part of my life (our household is getting its 3rd tank set up), but my wife comes first.
  2. Keep us posted :spop:
  3. The Common House Borer prefers old, well seasoned timber. The beetles emerge from the wood between November and February, they are more active at night, and return to flight holes during the day to lay eggs. The Two-toothed Longhorn Borer is more destructive. it prefers softwood timbers. These beetles emerge during autumn, and are active over a long period. They dislike light and prefer the underside of timber. The Powder Post Borer is similar to the Common House Borer, but only attacks the sapwood of hardwood timbers (Oak, Tawa, etc.). It lays its eggs in the pores of the hardwood, so softwoods are not affected. This info is from my BCITO training manual. :slfg:
  4. Hi Amy, I do 20% water changes once a week for my community tank, and twice a week for my breeding tank. I used to get my water tested once a week, but after three results all being identical, I stopped wasting the pet store's time and test equipment.
  5. Pics and more details please. which fish are involved?
  6. There's the plastic storage containers (toy boxes) that are 110L for about $30
  7. Have you tried calling the manufacturer?
  8. I'm starting to wonder if I'm the only one doing this using buckets...
  9. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=58935 My BN don't mind the silica sand, but they love their wood.
  10. Very nice setup. What about dechlorinator?
  11. Looks much better than the last time I saw it :spop:
  12. It may be the tail trying to regrow itself. Check with Adrienne, I think she has had a lot of experience with Bettas, so she may be able to specify. Either way, fin rot or regrowth, you are better off by separating the Betta from the tetra's if they are causing fin damage. Lots of little water changes, maybe 10% every two days?
  13. I've found they love bamboo
  14. They are a myth. It's cheaper to get a signal disruptor.
  15. Hmm... fresh water, no chlorine, no ammonia, nitrite, or nitrates. In my limited experience, I don't think water conditions was your COD. Shock could be a factor, but you would have to get them to test their own water, and they don't like to do that with customers around... :dunno:
  16. :mbh: still no pictures....
  17. Hi Amy, I'm sorry but you will hear this answer quite often. How long was your tank set up for before you added the Axolotl? Most people recommend a month of cycling, or until fully cycled. Did you use dechlorinator? These are some of the basics that catch new owners out. Hope this helps, John
  18. !drool: So, what's it set you back so far? I won't be doing a marine tank for another 5 years yet, but I might collect bits and pieces along the way.... What do you're parents think of it? If my daughter wanted that much space for a tank, I'ld outright say no. There isn't room here.
  19. Very strong bite. Will not let go. flicking it will take a few tries
  20. either he is fanning another lot of eggs or the remaining fry of the first spawn that are yet to be free-swimming. Some of them get more curious than their siblings, and leave the safety of dads fins before the others. I am yet to have a batch of less than 50, so 17 seems quite low.
  21. Stresscoat is water conditioner / dechlorinator. Helps with the slime coating on fish. As I am in town, I use water conditioner with every water change. Others in my local club don't use any, and they see no effect. My water seems to be heavily chlorinated, so I do use it. Stresszyme is live bacteria, like cycle. They recommend using it with every water change, but I think it is more for getting a tank established than continuing to keep it cycled. I use a small amount of a different brand (TLC or something) on every second water change.
  22. If you notice the flow is reduced, then clean the tubes. Try to leave the filter media alone as much as possible. This is where a lot of you good bacteria is stored, and should only be cleaned out once every 6 months or so. The filter wool and sponges will only need a rinse to clear any blockages. Some people rinse the bio noodles, I don't.
  23. Is this how you won at conference? :gigl:
