  1. Hey there Gareth, Welcome to the forum, it's a wonderful place for all aspects of fish keeping and is great if you ever need to ask for advice etc. I'm also from Invercargill so if you want a hand or a friendly bit of advice feel free to hit me up.
  2. I think eheim are one company that list the actual flow rate of the filter with media in it, someone correct me if I am wrong?
  3. They're basically considered the cheapest nastiest skimmers available, if you have a sump go for a bubble magus curve 5, available from fish-street.com. Lots of local reefers use these skimmers and rate them really high.
  4. Just repeating what I got told, it's for anyone involved in the hobby to complete, any question that doesn't relate to you just don't answer.
  5. Gutted dude, that sucks. Half way through moving homes, didn't realize how much junk I have accumulated over the years!
  6. No I haven't seen this particular bulb in action, it's only a new product he started stocking so he only posted about them today and as soon as I seen it I thought of this thread. My personal feelings on lighting especially led is the cheaper it usually is, the lower the quality and results will be. It's one of those things you don't really want to skimp on as it will generally only cost you more money in the long run. Leds are still considered a "new" type of lighting when it comes to the aquarium hobby in New Zealand so it's hard to get good local advice from really experienced users, and we don't have too much choice in locally available stock so we have to go overseas to get what we want and rely on other overseas hobbyists reviews that have used them for quite some time. A mixture of blue/white has been the accepted lighting in reefing for so long now and most of the most amazing reef tanks in the world are lit this way. It's only recently that there has been available units with other spectrums of light so it's still pretty early to say if it is going to make a huge difference to reefing and coral growth other than making them look more appealing. I think it's excellent and will definitely be buying a mixed spectrum light as I enjoy looking at corals and fish under lighting other than a white/blue mix.

  8. I meant true percs, not occys. True percs are generally harder to find especially locally bred ones.
  9. Hello & welcome to the forum, sounds like you jumped right into the deep end haha.
  10. I have ltrs of 4dkh water I made up for my drop checkers, if you pay for postage I can send you some late next week after I have moved.
  11. Hey there, where are you located?
  12. No. I would be seriously concerned if it was especially considering the house is reasonably new. Just try to position it so that it sits across a couple of support beams.
  13. Body is about 70-80mm long, pincer arms are about the same and his "feelers" are around 150mm. I feel he is too big for my rsm130.
  14. :cophot: Your shrimp looks so tiny compared to my one lol.
  15. Your only choice for a tank that size in Queenstown is finding someone that will either ship you one or picking one up yourself from out of town. You will be hard pressed to find a custom tank maker who will ship a tank especially the size you are wanting.
  16. Use the 2ft for breeding and the 3ft for a growing out tank. Once the babies reach free swimming and eating bbs you need to do at least once a day preferably two times water changes of at least 50%.
  17. If you're serious about wanting to breed them I would definitely put them in their own tank with a breeding cone or something along them lines, I've never heard of discus successfully raising any fry when kept with other fish in a community type tank.
  18. There's no point setting up a tank when you are moving within 3 months, especially that far! Dude you seriously need to start thinking ahead. Also just so you know there is no shop thay sells marine stock or equipment any closer than Christchurch so I hope you're prepared to get all your corals and livestock shipped to you?
  19. Yes they are and yes they will, but they also grow to a foot long and need to be kept in groups of 6+ like all loaches, so unless your planning on a huge upgrade sometime in the future I don't recommend it. Most types of loaches will eat snails just as well as clowns so your better off picking one of the other types that are more suited to that size tank long term, I found dwarf chain loaches to be better at snail control especially for trumpets as clowns can have a bit of an issue with the different shell type. Another great method for snail control is leaving a piece of lettuce in the tank overnight and removing it each day before lights on and it should be covered in them.
  20. New Pupuke aquarium in auckland posted pics on facebook of some the other day.
  21. Not really considering live rock is probably the most important thing in a reef tank, it's the major biological filtration provider which is what lets us keep a successful tank without changing the water every day or so.
