  1. severum? they are pretty and fun, and kinda discus shaped if you squint or you could buy all my fish, and have a nice full, busy tank viewtopic.php?f=11&t=66525
  2. pretty sure clearwater ship live ones
  3. lack of oxygen would explain why the hoplo is sitting pretty, it will be breathing from the surface. adjust the filter output so that it is making a lot of splashing/disturbance on the surface of the water. it will assist the air pump in getting oxygen in the water. but i'm wondering if there is something wrong with your algae as all the fish that eat it die. are you using any form of algae control, algae killer, plant food or similar? what other chemicals do you put into the tank?
  4. :gopo: sounds like you need to do some ironing may as well cut the yellowing leaves off
  5. sign up to www.imgur.com , upload your photos there, post the links here. it's the easiest way i reckon
  6. have started doing what exactly? are the leaves dying off? help me help you...
  7. sorry your tank didn't work out for you sam. i don't remember posting in this thread. seems i have though. and i still wholly support the advise i gave. merry christmas everyone. 8)
  8. give it a go, fish love to eat shrimp
  9. are we talking about inbreeding or hybridization?
  10. sounds about right for winter. my koura died over summer when tank sat around 22-25
  11. do you have funds for a chiller for your tank, or a cooling system? without it your koura will slowly die due to long exposure to too warm water
  12. try here www.clearwatercrayfish.co.nz
  13. nah man, gambusia are noxious - illegal to collect and keep in tanks. if you catch them, you have to kill them. i wholly encourage you to do this. in tanks they are easy to keep but aggressive to any other species of fish, ganging up and killing them. or so i have heard...
  14. you may or may not keep them alive in 25%. only one way to find out. there is a banned noxious weed that looks a bit like oxygen weed (Lagarosiphon major). check the plants before you go collecting any plants from local streams as many are illegal to collect or posess. here is fnzas list of noxious/illegal plants http://www.fnzas.org.nz/?cat=92 and here is fnzas plant database to help you identify plants you find http://www.fnzas.org.nz/?page_id=2379
  15. for small tanks i use that spongey, weaved, nonskid place mat stuff from the $2 shop. way less intrustive and ugly than poly. ron is right. flat bench will be sweet provided no bumps. but if you're paranoid like me... see above
  16. eminems very first album "infinite" from '92. pretty chilled album, fat, caual sounding beats and rap god level lyrical skills already showing at beginning of his career... best track - biterphobia
  17. i don't know these tanks but if the base glass is flat on the bench then yes, use poly. if the base glass is elevated by the tank frame then i don't think you need poly, especially for small tank like this
  18. i have left the house for 20 mins, come back to find my oscar with half its scales missing, bleeding from the side, i think something in the tank fell on him, but i'll never know. i also have lost 5-6 fish over the last ten years to spontaneous deaths all with same symptoms, dizzy, lose colour, fins and gils clenched, and death within 4-5 hours of symptoms appearing. mystery deaths are an inevitable part of fishkeeping. best not to get too caught up on it. never get attached to a fish!
  19. i find so many i'd like to be able to sell them but i don't think that is legal without a licence. it is totally legal to collect them though, just make sure there are no "no fishing" signs! i know a few good spots on the north shore i'd be happy to share with you if you can get out this way. otherwise, try your local streams, water culverts etc. find the big pools where water sits idle, and where there is partially submerged vegetation around the edges. shrimp like to hide in calm shady sheltered areas. use a fine mesh net (2$ at the warehouse) and scrape around the edges of the vegetation. or, as shrimp are ruthless scavangers, using a baitcatcher or similar funnel type device works well, use shrimp from the supermarket for bait. good luck. remember you will need to keep your tank quite cold if you want them to survive. i haven't been able to keep them alive more than a couple of months. anyway. have fun 8)
  20. is it in town or on a highway? coz demographics on a highway, long distance drivers with kids in the back would gladly pay out for an activity pack, fill with cheap toys, crayons, lollies etc in a town or city, i'm gonna have to say booze. drive through booze shop, don't have to get out of your car. i think it might possibly be legal even.
  21. i've been trying to hybridize american cichlids for years. i had a female jag pair with male texas, and produce eggs a few times. never knew if they were fertile as the jag would eat eggs around after a couple of days. she also ended up killing the texas. i have owned convict x jack dempsey, very strong and aggressive fish. i currently have a male jaguar which has paired up with a female salvini who is big enough to produce eggs. lots of mating behaviour between the two. have removed most other fish from the tank to give them more space. hope something happens but there is no way of knowing! internet has lots of conflicting information! so i can only experiment. anyway, i am only interested in breeding these for personal ornamental fish, and for the challenge of making them breed together. i would cull all but the best/strongest few. i know the importance of not letting hybrid bloodlines get back to original ones. and most hybrids actually look terrible, like a lot of our fish these days. i have seen some terrible looking hybrids around all because of idiots selling off unidentified accidental fry they found in their community tanks. unplanned hybrids should be live food. TL;DR other people should not breed hybrids, only me.
  22. roadside biltong store. learn to make it well and sell for $50kg. good driving munchies. i have another suggestion but that kinda depends on whether there are any schools or churches in the immediate area...
  23. i like chris lilly shows but this new one about ja'mie is squabbly and annoying. it is however, a lot better on mute.
  24. :slfg: did you name it, or did your kids name it? i wouldn't be surprised either way really this is gonna be an exciting tank. the aro looks nice, love them when they are small with their pink tails. how long is it now? take note i wanna know how fast it grows :spop:
  25. orrr... get a deal on a bunch of small silver aros and grow them out as a group.....
