sorry i didn't respond sooner. your video link doesn't work. convicts are very aggressive fish. especially the males. i get away with having a breeding pair of convicts in my central/south american tank because all other fish are big enough to stand up to the convicts regardless of how stroppy they get, and there is enough room for the convicts to have their own territory and space to breed. i also think that convicts like to chase stuff around for fun. you say he's chasing his kids around... as long as he's not eating them then there's no reason to call FYFS (get it?)

why are axolotls allowed? they thrive in cold fresh water. i get what you say about salamanders hunting on land. but either of them could do damage in our ecosystems. why didn't they ban both at the same time?

you so totally have to get it! fish always look paler in fish shops. it will colour up once it's in your tank.

don't write it off yet. if you can find one it would be worth going out of your way at least attempt to accommodate it. hopefully you find a small one. like most other cichlids, you either get an aggressive one or a passive one, i think a lot of it depends how it is raised, what it is raised with etc. i think most of the problem when i had one is that my tank was only 300l - too small for both the vieja and the oscar. and my oscar is really big and really grumpy..

are you able to do some tests on the water, and tell us the results? it would help to know your tank temperature, PH, ammonia/nitrates/nitrites etc if you can't do the tests yourself, take your water into your local fish shop, they should be able to test it for you.

i had one a couple of years back, quite big around 20cm. very pretty, and very staunch fish, almost like a flowerhorn aggression wise. never liked my oscar so ended up with jaxxnz who is hopefully breeding it... anyway. i'd never seen one before and i haven't seen one since..

put tin foil barbs, common plecos and clown knife fish on this list too.
