  1. I did well in the bake-off. The pigs in mud originally came 2nd in the decorated cake section but when it then won the overall People's Choice award (by a large margin apparently) they then made another entry 2nd so the prizes got spread out. I do have a pic of it with 2nd on it (as proof) before they swapped them though 8) The Polka Dot cake came 2nd in the cake section and a lot of people wanted to know how it was done. The Caramella slice came 3rd in the slices and biscuits section. The cup cakes were not placed. I now have a ceramic plaque for the People's Choice Award, 2 honey products, some After Dinner Mints, a meat voucher and a jewellery voucher :dnc1: They auctioned off the 14 decorated entries and the pigs got the highest price of $50, with the cheapest being $25 so I think their fund raising efforts went well. :happy1: Pics of the entries here The turtle won the decorated cake section. All cupcakes, except my banoffee ones, were done by 13 years and under.
  2. They are balls. You make them in a special pan. You then put them in the tin and pour the cake batter over them so they get cooked 2x.
  3. Yes I did Cam and I am pleased with the results. Up close they look like they might have swine flu or eczema but overall I am pleased with how they turned out. They are made with the white icing you put on Christmas cake. I think it is what is referred to as fondant. I followed the instructions here
  4. Here are all the entries, ready to go... One decorated cake, 2 for the cakes section and one for the biscuits and slices.
  5. Why are you using anything when you do water changes? Isn't Christchurch's water back to its usual pristine self?
  6. It is a mud cake :bggrn:
  7. My entry in a local fun baking competition. Fund raiser for one of the kindys...
  8. What species of fish? It is my understanding saltwater fish can be very sensitive to various things when it comes to transport or being moved.
  9. How long was the journey? What was the ratio of water to air? How many fish were in the bag? I would not expect the lack of added oxygen to cause fish loss on the journey home (depending on answers to the above questions). After all, the average hobbyist, swapping fish with a mate, does not usually have access to oxygen tanks. I have travelled for 2 days with bagged fish, opening the bag daily to do water changes, and all arrived safe and sound.
  10. I do not have algae on my glass :ton:
  11. Following that theory, surely the green ones often seen on my windows should be partially see-through and dusty looking?
  12. What size tank is he in? What other fish are in there? How long have they been there?
  13. We had one of those here over summer. Didn't realise it was a foreigner. Thought it was just an albino local.

    The What's Up? thread.

Does he make a loud crazy clicking noise like a loach??
  17. There are replies to this in the other thread you started in the saltwater section.
  18. Had a lovely day. We headed to Kelly Tarlton's and got a tour of the workings behind the scene. We fed some of the fish (and got a bit wet) then headed for Mission Bay where we enjoyed fish and chips on the beach in the sun. After lunch we visited Hollywood Fish Farm, Mt Roskill and then around to Sophia's place before heading back to rest before tonight's BBQ. :dnc1: :dnc1:
  19. Never fear Sophia - different types of drink. Tea, coffee, juice and water only

  23. It is also possible he has swallowed a stone, causing a blockage. Have you stones as substrate, or sand?
