  1. A very poorly arranged room. That sofa should be right in front of the tank, not beside it
  2. Blackouts work for cyanobacter, not green water.
  3. I bet that's what the people of Christchurch used to say!
  4. Just because you got eggs does not mean you have a pair. Females do not need a male to produce eggs.
  5. I was talking to a lady last night who said her dad was never the same after returning from the war and it ruined his life. He would never talk about it, got severe depression and became an alcoholic as a result. It is sobering to realise how young they were - some only 15. A lot of the fighter pilots, and ground forces, were still teenagers when they died for their country. We will remember them.
  6. Good also to see the angels getting to know each other on top of the tank How safe are these stands in a quake? With no cross bracing, surely they will go sideways and collapse or are the cupboards enough? :gpo2: :nfs:
  7. Heat the room A dehumidifier will get rid of moisture. Good lids on the tanks will also help Have you considered what you are going to do with all the offspring?
  8. I have found blackout works well for cyano but it must be a total blackout and don't feed the fish during this time either. The plants will cope with it for that short a time. Whether it comes back again depends on the cause which, as said, needs to be corrected.
  9. I'm with Ira on this one, I would have thought you could throw the old media into the new filter.
  10. 'He kept catching on to plants and getting stuck but since I've rearranged the tank to make it disability friendly he's been absolutely fine.' Is it wrong to laugh out loud when reading that? :dunno:
  11. aaannndddd... most importantly, 31 July is St Neot's Day. He is apparently the patron saint of fish! Perhaps we ought to hold a St Neot's Day competition and get members to post their fish related stuff on the day - be it baking (cooking fish or fish shaped goodies), art, craft etc.
  12. and don't forget good old St Andrew
  13. Mushy peas are awful!!! We tried them when in the UK. We will have Dragon Pie (it's actually Shepherd's Pie but Dragon Pie sounds fancier and more appropriate for St George)
  14. We have 2 Main Coons where I work. If Morris stands on his hind legs I think he could rest his paws on my shoulders. They can streeeetch a looooooooooong way!

    welcome

I suspect English is not his/her first language. Hi and welcome.
  16. Not chocolate but it does have a gooey centre - of lemon curd. Triple Lemon Cupcakes, sprinkled with lemon jelly crystals...
  17. Small doses of salt are often used as a "tonic". It is not something I do myself but many others do, routinely.

I can't imagine what it must be like to have to keep moving, for whatever reason. We built our house in 1979 and have been here ever since! The thought of packing up gave us the horrors so we just added on
  19. Fresh baking - you get to lick the bowl and utensils too. I have just made some triple lemon cupcakes.

Ever since I saw a pic of a Polka Dot Cake (a few days ago) I wanted to give it a go. The original was a 3 layer cake done in 6" tins. I did not have any of these so was going to do 2 x 8" tins but, after stuffing up the first lot of polka dots, decided a single layer would do. :gigl: I just wanted to see if they came out looking anything like the original and I am pleased with the results. Next time I will add more balls but I did not have enough that turned out as well as I felt was needed so it is less dotty than it might have been... Also, I used too much butter in the icing I think and it had a tendency to slide off as I was trying to slather it around the sides. Never mind, I know what to do next time and the cake is now all sliced up and individually bagged to go on my dad's church stall tomorrow. He runs it every week as a fund raiser. They need a lot of money to quake-proof their hall. Not up to professional standards but I was happy with it :happy1:
  22. Do these online things do any good? I thought you had to have an actual signature for something to be valid. :dunno:

Caved in and lit the fire for the first time this year. It is 11.2C outside and raining heavily (YAY we need it). Also good to see the pellet fire fired up no trouble first time. You sometimes wonder, after they have been sitting unused for so long, if they will go when you push the ON button. Even on low the pellet fire heats the room to about 26C so we are looking at the different ways of venting and pumping waste heat through to other rooms to see which would best suit. I am getting the urge to bake something. Nothing like baking, with the music up loud, on a cold, wet day (unless you are curled up by the fire reading a book).
