  1. ...and set off the smoke alarms burn porridge! Good to know the alarms work as they should I guess
  2. All good places suggested. We loved our time up there a couple of years ago and never ran out of things to see and do. You have to do Driving Creek Railway, Waiau Waterworks and the Butterfly and Orchid Garden at Thames. We also enjoyed Rapaura Gardens and don't miss the Ngatea Water Gardens (not quite Coromandel but worth the stop). The Ngatea gardens have funny signs all the way through and very well set up displays. Kids love it (they love the waterworks too). I think it must be the only gardens in NZ with a pterodactyl nesting area! We hired a house for a week at Tairua and headed out in a different direction each day. Have a look at my Photobucket albums here

    Hey all

Hi and welcome. You have joined the FNZAS or just signed up to this FNZAS forum? There is a big difference.

    hi there!

Hi and welcome Carla. Adding 21 fish to a tank that is only a month old might explain the deaths Of course, you may have a 250L+ tank for all I know :-? Do you know anything about "cycling" a tank? Read up on the subject and you will find it very helpful and avoid more deaths although, as livingart said, if you have live stock you also get dead stock.
  5. Hi and welcome Lester. I have been keeping fish for over 30 years and still have a lot to learn too

No, you said the mods were full of innuendo - just like the Simpsons. As a Simpson myself, I am not full of innuendo

Excuse me but I object to being referred to as a nazi. Nor am I full of innuendo!

I looked at the time it was posted and the time the post in the mod section said they had removed it :-?

    About 5 hours I think 8)
  10. Mine grows big leaves at the surface too. It is the light. I only have 4 daylight fluoros on my tank.
  11. Obviously it's time you moved
  12. Depends on whether you want to see the pretty colourful fish or not. Goldfish are pretty much it as everything else is too hard to see.
  13. Good to see you made it home safely Sally. When I saw more unrest on the news and that tourists were being attacked I was concerned about you. Good to hear the fish survived as well 8)
  14. All my driftwood was just picked up from the beach, washed and scrubbed, then added to the tank. Never had a problem.
  15. Our first tank (not counting the ones when I lived with my parents as they were their tanks) was a 2ft. We killed guppies like you wouldn't believe! Turned out the nice dark red gravel we had bought from the garden centre was actually meant for African set-ups and would raise the pH to over 8  We couldn't figure it out and kept adding pH Down Once we found a fish keeper who figured out the problem we changed the gravel and went from there. Tried to tell the shop about the gravel but they weren't interested.

    is this true

It works with certain African species.

    Swim bladder?

I would concentrate on getting the water parameters correct and see if that fixes it. Perhaps this fish was more sensitive to the water quality than the others.
  18. Not sure if there is any treatment since symptoms are vague. If it was only one fish I would leave it and see what happens. If it is being harassed by other fish then separate it. Could be a female with PMS perhaps? Slightly bloated could be it is constipated or a female may be getting egg bound. This happens sometimes and I don't think there is anything you can do. If constipation, try feeding it a bit of cooked, shelled pea.
  19. I didn't mean for this to be a "Let's slag Telecom" thread. I merely wanted to give you the heads up on this particular deal as we have had a couple of customers sign up without fully realising what the low cap meant in real terms.
  20. Just a heads-up for those signing up with the Telecom $16.95 per month get you going on broadband deal. Did you realise you only get 200Mb data cap per month and then you are charged at 2c per Mb? If you downloaded the latest AVG, for example, that would cost you $9 once your data cap was reached. Prior to that it would have used up roughly a quarter of your allowable bandwidth. If you know anyone signing up to this plan, warn them!
  21. At least you can say you tried You do not have to be a FNZAS member to write articles for the magazine
