  1. No, most people feed once or twice a day. Mine are used to getting less and it means I can go away for up to two weeks at a time without having to arrange for them to be fed The tank has been running over 5 years, is heavily planted and not heavily stocked. The fish must be fed enough as some are breeding in there.
  2. My community tank gets fed once or twice a week on flake, wafers, spirulina and occasionally cucumber or mozzie larvae and daphnia
  3. What sort of goldfish are the moor's companions? Is he the only fancy one of the lot? Moors have long flowing fins and are not very good at swimming (same can be said for many of the long finned, fat bodied goldfish). Depending on what other type it has been crossed with it may also have those stupid (my bias is showing here  ) googly eyes so will have trouble finding food as well. If it is smallest, and the others are faster swimming comets or a faster swimming type, it will be intimidated. The others will also be beating it to the food so it is possible it will starve to death. I don't have trouble with long finned goldfish being in aquariums, assuming the are large enough, but I do believe short finned varieties should only be kept in ponds.
  4. If he decaps himself he might find it hard to see his fish
  5. I am getting steady emails now but still think I am missing a lot that came in overnight (as the overseas newsgroups do) A friend in Nelson just rang and said he hasn't got net or email access as yet and now his phone is beeping continually :-?
  6. I wondered as I know you can make red fish a brighter red by feeding red foods, same thing with canaries so I wondered if reptiles reacted the same way.
  7. I'm now getting about 5 emails every 5 minutes (it auto checks every 5 minutes) so looks like it is up and running again. :bounce:
  8. I just received one email - and it was SPAM  Then a couple of minutes later got 2 messages sent 8.40pm and 8.55pm respectively. I am sure there are plenty more as we get lots thanks to Grant's newsgroups  They must be getting there. :-?
  9. Does the colour of their food affect the colour of the animal?
  10. I don't think their system upgrade is causing the problem though as it started last night. I hear some in Wgtn now have emails back

You need to be irritated before you can spawn Ira??
  12. I had baby tears as a pot plant a few years ago and I am sure it was hanging down the sides of the pot. Of course that may have been cos it was dying from lack of watering

The suggestion has been noted and will be discussed but we do not want to end up with miles (or should that be kilometres?) of thread titles to scroll though in the main index
  14. How widespread is Xtra's problem? We lost internet and email about 10pm last night. Got internet back this morning but still no email.Tried to get a status report via Xtra's website but got; Website maintenance Unfortunately the www.telecom.co.nz website is unavailable right now as we are upgrading our system between the hours of 08:00 and 14:00pm 29 November. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
  15. What about baby tears, Bacopa?

How can salt trigger spawning? They are freshwater fish. All salt does is irritates the fish's skin and makes it produce more mucus in an attemt to get rid of it.

How does it annoy others being in the coldwater section? :-?
  18. Don't try to alter the pH with pH Down!!! 7.8 is fine and, as said, will probably lower naturally as the tank matures.
  19. Dixon it is possible the automatic spray is affecting your granddad's asthma. Was it as bad before he got the sprayer? If not, it would be simple to stop the can spraying for a couple of weeks and see if the asthma improves. Asthmatics can be affected by all sorts of sprays.
  20. I have 4 bright white or daylight tubes (cheapest) and run them several years. When I get around to changing them, and I do them all at once, I get an algae breakout as there is so much more light in the tank. Staggering the change would be the answer.
  21. Have they laid them out in the open? BNs usually choose caves or under driftwood to lay their eggs. I have never tried to move dad and eggs so can't help you there. I found dad usually defended the eggs very well (but then mine also had them in a totally defensible area too  ) and other fish didn't seem too keen to munch on BN fry (maybe the spikes have something to do with it). Why don't you leave this lot and see how they go?
  22. Snobbish no, but if someone doesn't know the answer they won't reply either
  23. Hmm I might go plant some by my waterfall outside in the pond and see how it goes.
  24. I too say it looks like heater burn and the pink indicates it is healing. Keep the water as clean as possible and it should be fine. You can get heater guards to go around the heaterstats so they don't burn the fish.
  25. Daphnia change colour depending on what they have been eating.
