  1. banjo catfish? max size of 15cm though
  2. thought about whiptails? or brochis? (although brochis need a school)
  3. ah interesting. is this instead of outlawing them entirely as too many people have and like them?
  4. how about emerald catfish? I just got them breeding in my community tank and one fry survived and the juveniles look completely different to the adults
  5. haven't seen it since i took the vid, hope its still ok. anyone know when it will start schooling with the adults?
  6. good idea, been thinking about root type wood for my tank. let us know how it goes
  7. never hurts to let the tank and filter mature for a while before you spend up large 8)
  8. just noticed a juvenile emerald catfish getting air at the surface of my tank! it was probably 1cm long so hopefully big enough to not get eaten. I have made no attempt to breed them and they are just in my community tank, luckily, due to a lack of funds, theres not a whole lot of predators in there and lots and lots of plants. it must of been eating leftovers as i have quite a strong current and food tends to go everywhere (thats why i have the little guys!). any tips for my if there is any more in there to boost survival rate?
  9. my royal whiptail eats some beard algae, but other fish may be better at it
  10. yeah go with some micro schooling fish, smaller the better. if you want a snail eater then a loach is a good idea, but i'm not sure what a good species would be for a tank that small.
  11. maybe with the basic 'pH up' and 'pH down' products but proper pH for example says this: http://aquariumpharm.com/Products/Product.aspx?ProductID=81 now I'm kinda just arguing for the sake of it now as you've already convinced me ok Ill shut up about this now
  12. did not know that natural buffers form, at least not with acidic water. that changes things. you seem to suggest that no buffers are involved, but with most products the buffers are very reliable, in fact its the buffers in proper pH that made me use it. stable pH=good was my thinking.
  13. sure not the cheepest way but not really a problem as far as i see it. but when you do WCs the pH takes time to lower again... up down, up down. that's not good
  14. exactly how is doing that any better than using a shop bought product? but yeah if the tank is already set up for africans and you like them then that would be the easier way to go. but if you already have some then it could get a bit boring?
  15. so if the water is 8.4 he could put apistos in it?
  16. ah i see. any reason why you couldn't put driftwood in a marine tank?
  17. is that wood? never seen that in a marine tank
  18. ah but did you count time spent doing water changes in that
  19. it never crossed my mind to not treat water to remove chlorine, after all they put it in there to kill stuff.
  20. south american dwarfs with angels or discus? a whole lot of apistos would look awesome all with their own teritories
  21. well natural hybrids are something completely different to man made hybrids. and i suspect very rare. after all most platys in the trade are hybrids between Xiphophorus maculatus and Xiphophorus variatus BUT they were caught from the wild as one or the other and only hybridized when they wanted more colour forms. and platys are widely considered the easiest fish to hybridize.
  22. It looks very different to val on google...
  23. yes, but it's far from a general rule...
