  1. silver dollars are out unfortunately if you want plants. there is a similar species whos name escapes me at the moment which might be more suitable. whiptails will be more than fine in a tank that size (they only get about 10cm) hatchets will be fine, they stay pretty small (pricey though!), glass cats again will be fine. not sure about the rest.
  2. have a look at: African suckermouth catfish - Chiloglanis polypogon Euchilichthys sp.} Atopochilus sp. } both these genera live in africa and have suckermouths
  3. that seems crazy given that paradise fish are not on the list. sure they can survive in cooler water but breeding is very unlikely. if any do live in the wild it would be in small pools or ditches where no native fish could survive anyway. goldfish on the other hand...
  4. paradise fish, and White Cloud Mountain minnow at least are here and very common how can they not be on the list!
  5. oh and i found the killie i was thinking of: Blue Lyretail Killifish (Fundulopanchax Gardneri)
  6. some links: http://fish.mongabay.com/data/ecosystems/Congo_Zaire.htm http://fish.mongabay.com/biotope_african_rivers.htm heres some of the catfish from the area, no idea if they are available here though: Synodontis alberti: synodontis angelicus: synodontis brichardi: Synodontis Eupterus: Synodontis nigriventris:
  7. riverine upside down catfish! theres some African killies isn't there? congo tetras scream congo (dah) as well as butterfly fish and elephant noses.
  8. someone with access to academic databases would be handy. anyone a science student?
  9. you planning on visiting kelly tarltons in auckland? even if your not excited by sharks there is several tropical reef setups, NZ eels and crays, piranhas, Lionfish, seahorses, octopus, and the penguins! plus the other local fish in the shark tunnel are awesome too.
  10. i hear cardinals are best bred when they are young, so maybe you could breed from your new lot? I would love to get that many cardinals my aim is to get around 15, so 50 sounds awesome!
  11. they are they same species. just a matter of which you prefer.
  12. wow the tank looks good, but im not sure about the wood. it does seem to come from nowhere. maybe try a different orientation?
  13. i don't see how the lfs can tell what your oxygen level is from a water sample....
  14. looking good! what fish have you got in there? is that a pipefish i see?
  15. yeah i was there less than a year ago
  16. auckland zoo used to have some but i think they got rid of them. I remember something about they didn't want to set a bad example
  17. you gotta take a drive through the desert road seeing you get so close!
  18. khulis would be better than chains in a small tank but with only 3 you may never see them. maybe give the loaches a miss; the other fish will give you plenty of action in a tank that small. an otto is probably a good bet unless they need to be in a group?
  19. +1 almost as good as the waitomo caves and free!
  20. in coromandel: cathedral cove near hahei and climb mt paku in tairua auckland: west coast beaches, i recommend bethels beach and muriwai. north head (wartime tunnels) is cool too. northland: tiritirimatangi lsland
