  6. sorry dont know much about honey gouramis... pearls and golds and blues will be fine. pearls are slightly more sensitive and timid. Ask Ira about pearls, lol.. seems to have a knack with them from what i hear,
  7. An interesting read indeed... but most of it is narrated with a huge hint of speculation. ive heard of people breeding fantastic fish (very attractive and all) and very strong, but then there was the odd mutant fish in the batch... surely that means that somewhere along the line something has gone wrong? edit - and i ont mean like mutant with a new colour, or albinism, or something like that. i mean mutant like a massive eye or massive head. I used to keep africans (some commons) but then i had another tank that i kept only imported fish... fact is there was so much controversy about the type of fish it was that i packed a sulk and got rid of the whole lot. That giraffe you got was one of my nice ones  I could only take so much rubbish from the suppliers... 5 times i ordered electric blue "ahlis" and each time i got either cobalt blues or blue zebras. you can only imagine how happy I was, lol.
  8. can they get inside a human being?
  9. they like no movement but are perfectly fine with lots of current. its only when breeding that you will need to reduce water flow.
  10. I agree... but that's what happens when ppl try to pure breed fish so that they can preserve a strain... fact is the strain becomes so narrow and weak that you do get the odd weird fish in a batch - and that fish is all it takes to ruin a strain. not toooo long ago people tried to preserve desirable traits by erm "selectively" breeding.. we have a terrible word for them cause we know it doesnt work. now while humans are far more genetically complicated than fish, the same theory can be applied to both cases.. just my view, uncalled for i know, but please dont shoot me for it! lol im all for having good fish in NZ - but that means we need more blood from overseas instead of bredding with what we do have cause that makes us lose a lot of what we do have.
  11. oh also - it is also possible for you to do a nitrate test? how are the discus doing?
  12. rochelle it still sounds like chemical burn to me... pics will confirm that i suppose. i presume the events started like this: slime coat comes off, fish get white marks on them, looks like the fins have frayed, white around the edges - particularly the corners etc; eyes get a very faint film on them... looks like cloudy eye -but not quite... then that film goes more opaque? now while furan will not help in the removal of this problem - IT WILL ensure that immune system of the already compromised fish are not attacked by any nasties in the water. and i suppose its just a precautionary measure. stress coat / aloe vera gelly is great for repairing the damage done to the fins - and that should be the primary concern. i lost sight of the problem when this happened to my tank - but finally i figured out that all i needed to treat was the lack of slime coat - once that was done - everything else rectified itself. I do hope this helps, and if any one has any thing to add please do so =)
  13. you should get the food - aquori glo red. its fantastic. hard to source though, i usually have to do a lotta hunting and "palm greasing" to get my hands on it... excellent for discus, and there is a smaller pellet type for the smaller tetras, etc....
  14. if you like that look. sort out lighting first.no point getting those plants.. without the right equipment.. they will not survive. it is a beautiful tank for sure... the plants are commonly available- should be no problem getting most of them. PS- if you click reply on the bottom of the screen you wont have to quote all that someone has written, lol 8)
  15. good on you, lol.. its exactly the reason NO one but me is allowed to do stuff with my tanks... i even yell at the flatmates for touching the glass cause it makes it grubby, lol
  16. Try blending some of it and mixing it in the water... that way when he drinks, he will get the goodness. I've used this method on other reptiles, but never owned BD's.
  17. well you're half way there then.... angels (though they will eventually need a larger tank), and the bristlenoses are both S.American. So you can put them in the S.A tank if you choose to do so, lol  remember lighting is paramount for the propagation of aquatic plants - you have seen what i have done to grow plants.... Im not big on livebearers personally... but if you do have another tank sitting around, you can keep them in there... just ideas i'm chucking around...
  18. you can fill the water all the way up.. just have the whole waterfall theme going on, lol.... Im partial to S.American setups.... dwarf cichlids all the way, lol... can even have a small school of cardinals or something like that in there.
  19. more like an awp on the long in aztec (counter strike) Fallout 3? lol.. i must get that game!
