  1. yeah.. and let me know if you find nice firemouths - i would like a pair as well. they are a beautiful fish.
  2. damn. that sucks. firstly increase the water temp (28 -30) and do a partial water change. add some salt to the water and meth blue or green. (acriflavine is good too). to medicate i use the rule that you should be able to see the back of the tank after the meth blue has been added. this has always worked for me in the past. however there are more accurate methods lol. what are the other fish in the tank?
  3. if you do need any help with ideas on a bottom of tank filtration system let me know. We have a 10foot wall tank in my parents house that I set up with filtration that let water out the base of the tank, and an automatic water filling system. all you had to do was turn the taps for water to be let out and water would automatically flow in as the water level decreased. its an effective system. hope to help! :bounce:
  4. why don't you try breeding rams or apistos in your 3 ft? create a partition so you can just cordon off areas of the tank for rearing babies.
  5. jewels breed like rats too.. firemouths would grow too large for a 3 foot tank. again they like the acaras would be better off in a 4ft + tank. 3ft would be ok for a while.
  6. 2ft would be too small... 3 ft would be a bit cramped for 1 pair only, and 4 ft would be perfect for a pair or more. they are awesome fish to have.
  7. damn! its 21 degrees in my house. nice and cool breeze too.... 38 would kill me!
  8. lol all good. hope all your efforts pay off with no mortalities.
  9. put one in just in case someone on here decides to kill me for dishing out bad advise.
  10. I don't do ratios  lol i have a 200L tank and i shove a good handful of salt in there. (2 handfuls if i feel like it).
  11. add some salt to make the fish go into overdrive and make more slime coat. just in case. loaches will be fine with that.. ive got 10 CL's and they are ok with a lot of salt in the tank. oh also .. do a pH test if you can and let us know what the results are. melafix is a controversial one here - but ive used it commercially with success - so if you have some cant hurt to use it.
  12. rite... it could have been an ammonia spike. no/low ammonia detectable now right? use stress coat and aloevera gelly or similar if you have some. have a look at the eyes closely... any white film forming there?
  13. do you use plant ferts like flourish? and by tatty you mean white around the edges?
  14. hmm.. that's no good at all... are all the other fish perfectly fine?
  15. hmm... when was the last time you did a water change? it sucks when fish die for no apparent reason - v v frustrating.
  16. fantastic! :bounce: look forward to buying cheap discus off you lol  :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
  17. its a weak acid though isnt it alan? (says my uni chem book) on further reading ive also found that h2o2 can be used in the aquarium to add o2 to the water. also it was at some point used to control fungals on fish - but there are loads more effective methods. but sorry .. i was always told that h202 is a peroxide(hence the name); but still has weak acidic properties.
  18. this tank has since been ..... erm... dismantled. lol.. have set up a nice cube instead which is much nicer i think. got threadfins and neons in that tank. will post some pics up sometime. re filtraton - i will admit to attaching the fluval 405 to the tank once a week for about an hour, lol... that takes care of the normal hang on filter. lol
  19. 60L just wont cut it for discus. if you do have a chemical problem in the tank, the low volume of water will mean the change in water parameters will be more dramatic. try putting them in a larger tank, or maybe planting the tank as much as you can. Indian fern is great - you can leave it on the water, and the roots get rid of a lot of nasties. as for ammonia spikes - more frequent water changes will be needed. hOPE this helps, and the rest of your fish do well!
  20. oh and H2O2 on its own (not that you will pour it on a fish) will make a fish fuzz and die. kind of like when you combine baking soda and vinegar. or blood and H2O2
  21. H202 and water... the peroxide is an acid, and will lower the pH. the combination of H peroxide and water will produce water and oxygen but the pH will drop so I'd be careful.
  22. happy birthday Caryl! hope you had an awesome day! :bounce:
