    Hi

welcome andyinthebox :bounce: i hope you are enjoying birkenhead (i used to stay there and a few other places around AKL before i moved to palmy for uni).
  2. welcome aqua j. feel free to post in the welcome section so we can know more about you and your tanks! :bounce:
  3. stardust anubias? what on earth is that? well you hear something new everyday  you have pretty much the same plants as me, minus the swords which i keep in my nano. I dont have hairgrass either - it keeps rotting on me (probably emmersed stuff). Ill be waiting for that pic
  4. oh wow. look at it go! that's a pretty cool looking flower. almost lilly like.
  5. nice tank :bounce: the filter you want is available in NZ if you ask one of the major retailers to order it in for you. but the FX5 is also fantastic. it offers everything you would expect - and comes on special from time to time, so can even be purchased reasonably. the warranty is pretty solid, and you never have to worry about Fluval pulling a filter off the market, leaving you hanging with no spare parts... their part retention guarantee is for 10 years, which is really decent. how many litres is your tank? you could look at getting 2 FX5's if you had to resort to that. I have 2x405's on a 200L 4ft. tank, and there are no problems with my fish being flung across the tank cause of the water flow, so you need not worry about that happening with oscars.
  6. they are prone to so many diseases though. they occasionally pop up in stores. but look raggedy, fins get blood streaks in them. they look naturally sick - nothing like in the pictures above.
  7. pH is read on a log scale, so yeah, small numbers still equate to a large change.
  8. it made you vomit?   sad stuff  lolz
  9. it happens quite often unfortunately. like at the palmy animates - the pH for the community tanks are at pH 7. but in my tanks, the ph is about 5.5 so it take a while to acclimatise the fish and when i speed up the process i usually end up wit dead fish
  10. i agree, lol. i mean you have gravity on your side. occasionally you will get a mouthful (my god this sounds wrong) but all you need is that initial flow and it gets going.
  11. nice discus C67. incidentally.. do you know what strain they are? (red/blue turq X??) i like the shape.
  12. lets hope it doesn't go all resident evil on us.
  13. yeah i second that. once you get big fish - small fish, no matter how colourful seem very boring. we aren't allowed many of the large catfish, gars and such predators (bass) here in NZ. but there are still some cool fish that you can get.
  14. I get bored of some fish too (not clown loaches or plecos though) so when i have fish that i get bored of I either trade them for others, or give them away and get more. its depressing to look at a tank and think.. .gee those fish are boring... so i usually fill up my tank with plants and then it looks nicer and more natural, so if ever i do get rid of some fish - the few that remain in there still look nice when the occasionally come out and play.
  15. nice! and what clear markings, and shiny scales! :bounce: :bounce: you know how the title of the thread says "posing a photo".. if it said "my blue tongue" or something similar it will make the topic more clear.
  16. id reduce the flourish treatment to twice a week. its just that it can be quite dangerous, and it doesn't help to have a small volume of water. I coordinate my fert treatments with waterchanges cause there is no point putting a fert in if you do a wc the next day
  17. you can post them here, or create a new thread - its your call  oh and welcome! :bounce:
  18. clouded eyes? could be the flourish. particularly susceptible to fish that lack scales. take out the fish that are affected and put them in an established tank that has different water if you can.
  19. were there scars on the fish? almost like burn marks? patches where the slime coat has come off?
  20. if they are then they are infertile in this case. Ram eggs should be a golden-ish / colourless "colour". you could have more than 1 female. have a look at this link here
