I'm one of them! Unfortunately I don't have that much money to blow on a tank right now (well I do as we sold out car, but we kinda need to buy a new car!).
  2. I use it, but usually less than recommended, but my water changes are usually 30-50%. I buy a $50 bottle of stress coat and it lasts for ages, way less of a pain than trying to stand 150L+ of water in buckets over-night.
  3. Not a repeat, but the question still remains... Ben and Charles have 'rules'? The smoke monster? Jacob? WHAT?
  4. Shrimp, Hikari Cichlid Gold, cos lettuce, blood worms and discus tucker. Works well for the cichlids I'm keeping.

    Condensation

Other than keeping the tank well covered there's not much you can do about it. I've used dehumidifiers before and found they just chew thru the power and make the tank evaporate faster.
  6. I haven't had any problems with the aquaone heaters either, I've got a really old one that the thermostat has broken on, but you can't expect them to go forever I guess. Its still good for bringing the tank back up to temp after a water change.

Thats a massive clam!!! Richard at the LFS in Whangarei keeps telling me I should set up a reef tank, but I think I'd be better off burning the money...
  8. I just put the gravel syphon out the window, and use the garden hose to top it up. Sometimes I'll add hot water with the cold to minimise the temperature difference, but usually only on cold days.
  9. So does this mean they are able to be imported?

    Combatable?

Haha I didn't even notice that!! 180L doesn't help that much when talking about cichlids, footprint is far more important than over-all volume.
  11. Being raised in too small a tank? How big is the fish? Could also be a birth defect.
  12. Just go out to the airport and find someone with space in their carry-on luggage and pay them $50.
  13. Got some mood lighting happening and barry white on the stereo?
  14. Some people keep large overstocked tanks on a continuous flow system that changes XX% of the water daily, so yeah you could do one bucket per day instead of one big change. It may make doing a thorough gravel syphon a bit more difficult tho.
  15. Ah, I thought you were referring to my post. Yeah, I don't think its fair to provoke them unnecessarily, maybe he was trying to net them and he couldn't get the net near the tank? There was a female in there so they were probably breeding, and more aggressive than usual.
  16. Or anything that asks for your name/password/email address. :-? I wonder if anyone is actually stupid enough to fall for them...
  17. If I started digging on my driveway I'd come out in a field just outside Alcala del Valle in southern Spain. Looks a bit nicer than a grey Monday morning in Auckland!!
  18. I recall seeing that video somewhere else, and that is a lake in the southern US where they are introduced pests. Piranha aren't really aggressive, just predatory, in fact they're mostly fin nippers in habitat IIRC.
  19. http://www.cichlidscene.com/ Check out his 21" male umbee. I'd trade all my fish for one of them in a heartbeat!
  20. They do a dark grey grit, its not black but kinda close. You can also get it from stone and water world on marua rd for about half the price. Sorry HFF!
  21. get breeding those comps!!! Fronts look good too.
  22. Nice story, shame it probably didn't happen though. http://www.snopes.com/glurge/kyle.asp
  23. According to Real Cichlids Don't Eat Quiche umbee's are even more aggressive. "Ranging from Panama into Colombia, The Blue Freckeled Monster is truly a sight to behold. Unlike the Guapotes, umbriferum prefers to swim in the open waters and needs plenty of swimming space. Tanks less then 500 gallons will not do justice to these amazing fish. A predator that feeds on any fish it can fit into it's large mouth. Pictures of these fish are very difficult to come by as they always go crazy and attack the glass when you are near the tank because their territory extends beyond the limits of the tank. The following pictures were taken while someone was distracting the fish on the other side of the tank."
  24. I've had it about a year, its grown a bit in length, but also got a lot thicker.
