  1. Sorry, I generally don't read people signatures before answering posts...
  2. You mean the sound of efficient filtration and good aeration? You could use a hang-on-the-back type overflow and you wouldn't need to drill the tank.
  3. It wouldn't be a dumb question if you used a more specific term than "male cichlids". Also, "rainbow fish" covers a pretty wide selection of fish too. The answer you get is only as good as the question you ask...
  4. Not if you shop around and DIY. Plus you could have far more bio media in a sump, have higher turn over and have better filtration by having some of the media above the water level.
  5. BTW its actually illegal to take sand from the beach.
  6. All in good time, I haven't even mentioned this notion to my other half yet.
  7. Is that your attempt to make an offer?
  8. A trademe auction would be more than gaging interest, it would be taking the risk that someone is prepared to pay a good price for it! I know its only worth what someone is willing to pay, and I'd rather see him go to a good home than to the highest bidder. That said I'm certainly not taking any lowballer offers!!!
  9. ~14" male Ornate Bichir. Not actually for sale [yet], just contemplating a change of direction. Juveniles are around $80, and they'll take a few years to get this big....
  10. He looks like a piece of spaghetti compared to the aro!!
  11. I don't see why it wouldn't be alright. I've used gravel from the beach, and the only problem was the pieces of shell buffered the water, great for africans but not so good for the south americans I was keeping...

    SWFO???

Thanks Gibbo, I've never actually looked thru the SW part of that list. However, if its anything like the FW list there will be many fish that are on the list that are still never available here. More questions, what kind of skimmer would you recommend for this set up? This is something I know nothing about [yet], other than bigger is better.
  13. Ouch! How on earth do you do that? With that much suspension you must be landing pretty hard with it not set up right or something (or using warehouse seat posts). I'd hate to think how your backside feels! :-?
  14. I put it in my 3' for about a week before taking it out, it looked great, but with my over-stocked tank and power-feeding the fish to grow them on faster I decided something easier to clean would be better. Looks great if you're willing to maintain it!
  15. How much cheaper? I've always loved the look of them, but never really looked into it. How available are they?
  16. Heck that bichir better watch out!!!
  17. So not a separate species, or even a subspecies, just a selectively bred strain?
  18. I was actually quite surprised at how placid my 20"+ black aro was to catch when I sold it. I drained the tank to half the normal level and pulled everything out, all the tankmates had already gone, I guess he figured his time had come. One scoop with the big koi net jansens loaned me and he was in the chilly bin.
  19. Pics?? Not much you can do I think, just keep the water clean and warm, and add a little salt.
  20. Works fine, just like a pond really. Only down side is only being able to view the fish from above. There's people on MFK using pools for indoor ponds, usually with rays or large cichlids.

    SWFO???

Hmm, I guess thats the shrimps out them! I saw a dog-faced puffer a while ago, cool looking fish, would it be alright in this tank? Would the trigger have a go at the bristlestar also?
  22. 1x 60L 2' - Pinky the convict 1x 180L 3' - grow out for uarus, heckeli's, tyre track eel, and loaches 1x 300L 4' - big loaches, ornate, dats, etc waiting to go into new tank [maybe] 1x 630L 5' sitting empty in the garage while I contemplate its future. I'll probably do away with the 3' when the big tank is set up.

    SWFO???

I've read a few books, but not really sure what is available here. Do large angelfish and triggers get along, with more than one of their kind? IE could I keep a koran and an emperor angel in the same tank? Or two different triggers? I'd also like a tang of some sorts, and maybe a polkadot grouper.
  24. Lol, they're not really my cup-o-tea, but interesting still. Speaking of animals looking like cichlids, has anyone else noticed an increasing number of cows with the same colours as Tropheys duboisi? Black with a white band around their middle.
  25. Wow, the aro nearly makes that tank look small!! How hard was it to move him??
