  1. Three hours probably isn't long enough to have to worry about the oxygen level dropping or the filter media drying out of you have a trickle filter set up with media above the water. Some fish are much hardier than others when it comes to temperature change (and other things associated with a power outage) so to answer your question accurately/safely you should tell us what kind of fish you're keeping and more about the set up.

    .

Sounds like a real glass banger!! Any pics of him, how big is he?? I've heard people say they're very aggressive in smaller tanks, but in anything 300g and over where they have enough room for a territory they calm down a bit.
  3. My 3'x18"x18" Amazon-themed tank: 6 Acarichthys heckelii 1 Geophagus surinamensis 1 american tiger 1 tyre track eel 2 big chocolate talking cats 3 uaru a 4 clown loaches 1 small clown pleco 5 Gymnogeophagus balzani 1 peacock spiney eel Its a bit of a mix, and not ideal as the clowns like it hot and the gymnos like it cool, but as soon as the 5' is set up all the fish down to the clown loaches will be moved into the 4', and I'll probably do a more authentic amazon biotope withthe gymno's, altum angels, tetras, corys and maybe some whiptails.
  4. Probably not while they're breeding, unless you've got a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig tank!
  5. 6' tank upstairs?! How many litres? Hope the floor is strong!!
  6. Thats the only full-tank shot I have. I'll try take some better ones toningh. Thats the 4' with my large dat and ornate, plus the flagtail, sevrum and clown loaches. The pyrimid of pipes on the right is the loach hotel!
  7. I'll bite my tongue, even tho there's a perfect lolcat picture that could be posted...
  8. Because they're awesome!! Our white male also has colourful fins.
  9. As I'm sitting here in bed watching pinkie the convict in his tank, I realised its the same slightly-larger-than-2' tank I set up as my very first tropical tank. I was given the tank by a pommy guy who worked in the orchid next door to my parents when I was 11 (1992). I had goldfish, but he knew I wanted tropicals and a bigger tank (it seemed HUGE at the time). He made it himself! I didn't set it up for a few years, and when I did I had an eclectic mix of community fish, which mostly got destroyed by Arthur the firemouth. That lasted about 8 months before I bought a 4'er. Since then its spent many years sitting empty under the house, occasionally being pully out of retirement for all sorts of things; raising convict fry, seperating aggressive cichlids, planted community tank in mum's classroom, a group of small electric yellows, two different large male convicts (at seperate times), even keeping native skinks! So, do you still have your first tank?
  10. I know that feeling all too well!! Glad to hear you didn't lose any fish.
  11. I hope not, otherwise I'll have to let all my fish go!! Sorry about the sidetrack Afrikan!
  12. This TradeMe link is allowed because the OP is asking a question about it and is genuinely interested in buying it.
  13. So you would propose a blanket-ban on cats? I don't think that would ever happen, despite the fact that it would be a great thing for the native eco system (provided they could be eradicated). Call it a compromise, but it would certainly go a long way to reducing the cat population if you were required to have cats registered and had to buy from a licensed breeder.
  14. This is unbelievable, every day I see more reasons to leave this country!! Cats don't need to be banned (neither do most reptiles!!), just regulated like dogs. They should have to be desexed (unless you're a certified breeder with a permit) and registered, and if they are found roaming at night they are returned to the owner after a fine is payed or destroyed. I wonder what will happen to the blue tongues at Jansens...
  15. Ah yes, it must be a favourite past-time of northlanders! I remember at school we'd go shooting on a friends farm, usually with a semi-automatic .22 with a powerful scope and a 5-shot semi-auto shotgun! One night we got over 20 possums out of one big old pine tree in the middle of a paddock!!!
  16. I think we already understand the impact of possums, and strapping/shooting/poisoning them is the best way to deal with it. Yes its not their fault, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't kill them. Same goes for cats, but good luck persuading this nation of cat-lovers that little fluffy is actually vermin!

    is this true

I can't see 5 male dovii living together in a 1000L tank just because there isn't room for them to form a territory...
  18. I think I'd have a Ratel for a guard "dog". If you don't know what they are, remember the black and white animal from 'The Gods Must Be Crazy 2' that latched onto his boot and wouldn't let go...
  19. You'll need to move the senegals too (or just remove the eggs) as the parents will eat the eggs and the fry too.
  20. in this order of priority: Species tank of Uaru fernandezyepezi, with a few royal plecs. One large male umbee. Polypterus bichir bichir, ansorgii, comngicus and endlicherii. Maybe FW rays. Not sure about non-fish, a Galapagos tortise would be pretty cool tho!
  21. Don't get me started on roaming cats!! If the stupid green party really cared for our native fauna then right at the top of their agenda would be placing strict restrictions on cats (similar to canada's where they must be desexed and registered, and aren't allowed to roam), but I guess that would make them too unpopular with the voters... I guess people could say the same about fish, if you let a large central american cichlid go into a steam in summer it would probably devour a heap of native fish before the water got cold enough to kill it. I hope that doesn't give maf any ideas...
  22. It happens some times, my 18" fire eel just dropped dead one day. It was active and [appeared] healthy when i left for work, came home and it was sitting on the bottom dead.
  23. Thats what happened to our pet possum! I found a baby in the pouch of a mother that had been poisoned, we kept it for all of about 2 hours, from when I found it walking up the drive coming home from school until dad got home from work. I'm glad though, it seemed a bit harsh at the time, but when they do so much damage to the native bush its not the kind of animal you want to get attached to.
  24. Great stuff, how the ornates were watching! Did you see the thread on MFK about the guy who had albino senegals spawn??
